901.0. "Something To Talk About / The Power of Love" by SCAS01::SHOOK (metroplexed) Thu Aug 10 1995 02:07

this flick has one great scene; unfortunately it's between two
supporting characters (played by robert duvall and gena rowlands)
and only lasts about five minutes. there is also a pretty good
sequence at the beginning when julia roberts confronts dennis quaid
about his extra-marital affair -- in public -- but the rest of it is
completely predictable. my wife liked it, i didn't.

here's the plot: dennis quaid, married to julia roberts, is having
an affair. can he be physically assaulted and humiliated enough to
end the affair and re-capture that old youthful zest for romance with
the "pretty woman?" well, no spoilers here!!

	one star (out of four.)

Well, I didn't dislike this piece of fluff quite as much as Bill.
Having Dennis Quaid in a movie will redeem it quite a bit (IMHO 8*) )
I thought that Kyra Sedgewick stole most of the scenes she was in and
Robert Duvall was very good. I thought the ending was very contrived
and must have been tacked on after a few test audiences had seen the
movie. Would have been more realistic if they had left what looked
    like the first ending alone.

The first ending would have had her forgiving Dennis and going back to
being an extension of her husband and father. I think it was more
realistic of her to realize that she had to find happiness and value
within herself and not through a man.

I think her statement that women are brought up to have low
expectations for themselves is very true and not enough women recognize
    it. They just accept.

Did they make another movie together?

A movie came out about 3 months ago called
"Something to talk about" where they played
a married couple who break up because Dennis'
character is cheating on Julia's character.

that's likely it..often the names in the UK are changed
    for some reason.

This movie was just released in Europe under the title
    "The Power of Love".

Don't know if its the same, I haven't seen it yet.

In Austria it was also released under the title of "The Power of Love"
but it is definitely the same film as in 972.1 or topic 901 for that
    matter.

It was ok but nothing more.

I Rented this one over the weekend. In a word it's terrible, even on TV, sort
of a cross between soap and sentimental slop.

The movie starts out really slow. It becomes a weak soap opera with a few
decent gags along about the middle but once the horse shows start it dies
completely.

The acting is OK but all the big names are just repeating stuff they've done
much better before and the new people don't add much of anything. The script is
practically non-existent.

And the real kicker is that when I went to return the tape this morning
Blockbuster was closed and there was no night drop off bin or slot. Dam if I'm
going to pay a dime extra for this thing.

  * out of 5,
  George
