897.0. "Film Festival Info" by TROOA::BUTKOVICH (happy&peppy&bursting with love) Sat Aug 05 1995 22:07

I thought that Topic 3 used to be the generic "Film Festival" topic,
but since it's been changed, thought I'd start a fresh one.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs Sept 7-16 and this year is
the 20th anniverary. Today's paper has listed some of the screenings
    and celebrities scheduled.

Andy Garcia, Nicolas Cage, Sissy Spacek and odd couple Walter Matthau
and Jack Lemmon are all expected to attend gala screeings of new
    movies.

Garcia will be here Sept 9 for the world premiere of "Steal Big, Steal
Little", a romantic comedy directed and co-written by Andrew Davis (The
Fugitive) Garcia (playing a dual role as twin brothers battling over an
inheritance) stars along with Alan Arkin, Joe Pantoliano and Rachel
    Ticotin.

Cage plays an alcoholic who hooks up with hooker Elisabeth Shue in
"Leaving Las Vegas", a dramatic love story written and directed by Mike
Figgis (Internal Affairs), which gets its world premiere Sept 15.

Matthau, Lemmon and Spacek head the all-star ensemble cast of "The
Grass Harp" an adaption of Truman Capote's autobiographical novella,
directed by Matthau's son, Charles. The film, which also features
Edward Furlong, Mary Steenburgen, Piper Laurie, Roddy McDowall, Charles
Durning, Nell Cater and Toronto actress Mia Kirshner (Exotica) makes
its North American debut Spet 10.

Also announced yesterday, the gala North American premiere of "My
Mothers Courage" a Holocaust drama produced, written and directed by
    Michael Verhoeven (The Nasty Girl).

The festival box office is (416) 968-FILM (3456). There is also a web

Can anyone provide any information regarding the 1995 Edinburgh Film
Festival. A listing of films shown or a URL would be even better.

I plan to be in Edinburgh for the fringe next weekend, and hopefully
catch a good film whilst I'm there.

    Thanks
    Richard
897.2TROOA::BUTKOVICHwell, tomorrow is another dayTue Aug 06 1996 13:586
Dates for the 1996 Toronto International Film Festival are
Sept 5-14th. Not a lot has been announced yet, with the exception of
the Closing Night Gala which will be a film directed by Tom Hanks (I
forget the name) For those that are interested, there is a web page
at http://www.bell.ca/toronto/filmfest/ but it doesn't have a lot of
    info yet.

That would probably be "That Thing You Do!" which is the story of a '60's
rock band and their rise to stardom, with more than a little help from their
manager (Hanks). He also wrote the film.

General release is currently scheduled for October 4.

    <-- yep, that's the one.

Here is a better web address for the Toronto festival:

I received my program book yesterday and am just waiting for the schedule
so I can make my "picks".
