re .3 - The word is "woman", not women.
re .10 - How many movies out there actually have redeeming
social qualities? All too few.
This whole NC-17 thing cracks me up. Violence is fine, blood,
guts, whatever...heck, put it on the 6 o'clock news even, but
nudity?! Heaven forbid!!
As to the film possibly containing graphic sex, that would be
another story, but nudity alone - what's the big deal?! If
folks don't want to see nudity, they obviously should stay away.

saw it and universally panned it. They said it was abysmal and they
were checking their watches to see how much longer they had to endure.
I figure if it misses on its target audience that badly, I'll pass.

The "Showgirls" screenwriter said that he wishes high school kids
would sneak in to see the movie, because the message he was trying
to get across was that the "showgirl" life isn't all it's cracked
up to be.
I haven't seen it yet, but I do have the "Rolling Stone" ad on my

Sure, it's the *message* that's the most important thing ... :-)
Well, my high-school son and friends (all 17 years old, 6 months)
went last night. They, too, universally panned it. He did say that
the 12-year-olds (that got out of their movie early and sneaked
next door to "Showgirls") *did* seem to be enjoying it. If their
parents only knew what happens after they got dropped off at the
movies ...

Actually, this was a nationwide promotion. Video stores everywhere had
'em. Howie Carr went and got a bunch to give out on his show. The
annoying thing was that these were free promo videos, but all the
stores and rental places were only giveing them out if you
purchases/rented something.
I think they're wondering if this might be a new way to go for promos,
and you may see it a few more times.

are comfortable with their bodies and being nude. And in real

So what's the big deal?

| Joyce Kilhawick of Boston WBZ TV panned the film but I noticed that she
continued the trend I've seen with other critics. Almost no critic says one way
or the other if the movie was well made. They all seem so outraged by the
content that they either give a serious review panning the film from a moral
point of view or they talk about the subject matter in words reeking with
cynicism.
Some of the reviews here have been far more informative than anything I've
seen in the papers or on TV.

| My impression from my friends was that they were thrilled at the
prospect of going to a film to stare at womanflesh (they're all male in
their early 20's, remember?) but found it to be a horrible movie and a
complete waste of their time.
This is from guys who will watch bass fishing on ESPN for an hour
because they left the remote on top of the TV and don't feel like
moving to get it.

| .22 Exactly! But the movie wants us to feel "sorry" for the showgirls
because its stated objective is to let the world know what the "real"
showgirl life is like. Terrific. If a woman wants to take her clothes
off and display her no-doubt great body, then she should anticipate
the results of that. As a woman, why should I feel sorry for these
women. They can get a job in a computer company, no? :>{

According to an article in the paper the other day,
even the real showgirls in Vegas thought the movie stunk. They laughed
at it's untrue coverage. Without giving away any plot or surprises
(is this possible ?) I guess the theory of the movie is the climb from
stripper to showgirl and clawing your way to the top. Apparently, in
real life, much the opposite happens because the girls interviewed
said that many would be lured from showbiz to stripping because of
the huge pay differential.
They also mentioned how many showgirls have been dancing since they
were children and have formal training in ballet, music, etc and are
expected to choriograph some of their own stuff.

"Showgirls" is being re-marketed out in CA, and, if it works,
probably the rest of the country.
The studio is presenting it as a late-night cult film, trying
to give it the "Rocky Horror" treatment, using the same ploys
to get folks to go, i.e., going to trash the film is very
welcome.

Sorry. *I* knew my thought process; I expected everyone else to, also.
R, NC-17 and X ratings are based on sex *and* on violence. It was from
that that the comment about the rape scene came.
