This HongKong film won the Jury's Prize and Best Actress (Josephine Siao)
in the 45th Berlin Film Fest in Feb., 95.
It is an intelligent, heartfelt comedy film about real people and real
problems. Josephine played May, a 40-something working woman who
suddenly becomes babysitter to her grumpy father-in-law (Roy Chiao)
when his wife dies. The other relatives refuse any responsibilities.
May and her husband were torn between sending the old man to an
instituition. Later it was discovered that the old man was suffering
from Alzheimer's disease.
May had to handle the situation at home (husband and son), office and
of course, the old man. Her wittiness and innovative way of handling
the situation are the highlights of the movie. Watch out for the
scenes between May and her father-in-law.
The director is Ann Hui, one of HongKong's most talented. Her credits
include Boat People (1982)
For those who shared similar experiences (caring for an aged relative)
this film will have extra meaning.
I believe this movie will transcend the language barrier so go see it!
It will be distributed by Miramax in the US.
