865.0. "Hugh Grant and Hooker ???" by VYGER::HAMILTONS () Wed Jun 28 1995 03:37

What's the News on this "Hugh Grant" thing, when he was caught with a
    prostitute.

    Will he be charged ?

No doubt the media will turn it into a big circus of events. Never
    liked him anyway.

I expect he won't be getting up Hurley this morning ! ;-) get it ?

Ignoring the 'joke', I believe he already HAS been charged with
    committing a 'lewd' act.

To be honest it sounds like something of nothing. I can't imagine it'll
do his relationship with Liz Hurley much good (so much for the
'perfect couple' image), but a man having sex with a prostitute (in LA)
is hardly headline news stuff is it?

Hollywood managed to forgive Gerard Depardieu his alleged rape, perhaps
this'll just give Grant a 'wild man' image.

Any bets on him taking over from Bruce Willis in Die Hard X?

Apparently Miss Hurley hasn't commented since the tearful explanation
    from Hugh laast night.

He is coming back to England today.

Ah the world of double standards....

Had this 'lewd' scene been in a movie most folks would have been quite
happy to pay 4.50 to watch it all at the cinema.... And of course,
'cos it's in a movie (or theatre), the 'lewd' bit becomes art.

One of Shugie Grant's Pre-"4 Weddings..." movies ("The Lair of the
Snake Worm" I think it was called) which also starred Amanda Donohoe,
included plenty of bonking scenes, lesbian cat fights, that kind of
thing... (At one point Miss Donohoe... who is really a snake, right (!)...
seduces a boy scout and ends up poisoning the poor geezer by biting him
    right on the p3n15 !)...

WHat I'm trying to say here is that, a lot more so-called 'lewd' acts
went down in this movie, than could be performed in the back of a BMW.

Still... If Hugh's movie career is now up in smoke, he can always
    become a Tory MP. ;-)

    Reargards,

    Stephen

Ps: You don't have to be in the dirty-mac brigade to have seen the
afore-mentioned movie.... This was recently shown on network tv here in
Blighty, and Barry Norman (respected film critic in the UK) gave the
    film, 4 out of 5 stars !

well you cared enough to waste my time with your content-less note :-)

In any case, from what I heard the problem is not that the act
was lewd, but that the act was performed out in public (where it
could offend children and others faint of heart).

Even in Nashua [NH] we've had people arrested for lewd (ie. sex)
acts out in the public park ......

Once again, Hugh was never charged with soliciting! (from what
I heard) Even the LA police didn't care he picked up a hooker.
It was their subsequent actions that caught the polices (and
	the publics) attention.

> a statement in the Boston Globe from ol' Hughey :

That sounds like an out of context quote that actually came from
this weeks Entertainment Weekly (page 22) asking several stars
about what's cool and what's uncool (ie. this was published before
	Hugh's sex-capade). For Hugh Grant he's quoted:

		HUGH GRANT
		Star of Nine Months
		* COOL: It's cool that women like to sneak into my hotel
room now, but not nearly enough for my liking.
		* UNCOOL: My friends. They treat me like I have cancer.
Fame is like this terrible thing I bring into the room.
They lilked me much better when I was an ordinary un-
		  employed actor.

Heard on the radio yesterday that Hugh will be a guest on the Tonight

Meyers (Sp?) recently caught driving under the influence. Should be an
interesting show, if they don't cancel.

The incident I remember reported in the paper at the time was
in Greeley park. Time & location I don't recall (I faintly recall

865.26Hugh Grant - a stand-up guyVERBOS::NAZZARORIP Andrea 1/18/85 - 7-21/94Tue Jul 11 1995 12:0716
Hugh Grant did show up on Leno last night and gave an excellent
performance. He appeared extremely nervous at first, and only slightly
more comfortable by the end of the interview.

Leno began the interview exactly as he should, asking "What the hell
were you thinking about?" Grant was very forthright, saying how it was
obviously a mistake, how it's difficult to lead a perfect life, that he
was not going to fall back on any excuses, that hhe was totally at
fault and was totally wrong. The entire first half of the interview
was about the incident, second half about "Nine Months". Showed a very
funny clip; talked about how hairy Robin Williams is.

Overall, he came off as contrite, sincere, and intelligent. He
certainly did the right thing by honoring the commitment to the show.

What a stunt. This one is an all time classic.

Hugh Grant comes out of this a big winner. He secured his spot as a top name
leading man for years to come. One pundit estimated that it will rake in a good
$10 to $15 million extra for his next film.

Liz Hurly goes from being yet another flash in the pan cover girl that would
probably have been faded away soon to being a house hold word and will probably
become a supermodel. This did more for her career than a Sports Illustrated
cover.

Not only do the principals win, the Studio that did his last movie wins, and
everyone's agent wins. Jay Leno pulled a 10 rating beating Letterman by several
points, even Bam Bam Divine or who ever she is will now be able to write a book
and retire to the talk show circuit.

If there's a loser here I can't see who it is. I doubt they actually planned
the whole thing but the parties combined couldn't have come up with a better
publicity stunt if they had tried.

Sort of like the Boggs/Margo thing, everyone will end up crying all the way
to the bank.

I figure that by Liz continuing to sulk, and Hugh keeping the
sheepish, hang-dog expression, that they are now milking this
for everything they can get. I think in describing their
relationship as "business" is perfectly true and they're not
going let this chance at free publicity get away too soon.
