822.0. "Tyson" by RANGER::MAYNARD () Mon May 01 1995 14:57

This is an HBO made-for-cable movie based on the book "Fire and
Fear." The movie begins when Tyson was 12, just prior to his first
meeting with Cus D'Amato and ends with his conviction in 1989.
The acting is tremendous with newcomer Jai White as Mike Tyson, George
    C. Scott as Cus D'Amato and Paul Winfield as Don King. Apart from the
acting though, I found the movie disappointing for several reasons:

1)Although you see the rage and the anti-social attitude in Tyson's
behavior, there is never any attempt to explain why he is so angry and
so destructive, even as a 14 year old kid.

    2) The boxing sequences are made to look a lot more dramatic than they
actually were. The movie makes the Tyson-Douglas fight,(when Tyson lost
his championship) as a slugfest which Tyson lost because he didn't
train properly.I remember the fight as being a very unexciting match
between someone who didn't wan't to be there (Tyson) and someone who
    shouldn't have been there (Douglas).

3)The movie adds nothing to what we already know about Tyson. I still
    wonder what makes him tick.

This Sunday, 8 October, Parade Magazine published a story written by the author
of "Fire and Fear." The author is former welterweight champion, whose name I
cannot remember. I think it's Jose soomething.

Using Mike Tyson and O.J. Simpson as examples, Jose's(?) story is about bullies
and how the American public glorifies men such as O.J. and Mike as
personalities. As "Fire and Fear" is written by a boxing champ, the Parade
story is, I think, good: Insightful and analytical.
