789.0. "The Secret of Roan Inish" by CTHU26::S_BURRIDGE () Fri Mar 24 1995 11:04

Written, directed, edited by John Sayles, with cinematography by Haskell
Wexler.

This is a sort of children's fantasy story, set on the west coast of Ireland in
the late 1940s. A young girl is sent to live with her grandparents in a
somewhat remote village near the offshore island of Roan Inish, where the
family lived for many generations until leaving just a few years earlier. The
little girl is introduced to the lore of her family, which includes an
intimate relationship with local sea creatures, and a brother washed out to
sea as a baby at the time the family left the island. She herself is drawn to
the sea and to Roan Inish. Some odd events take place, leading to a suitably
happy ending.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. The photography is beautiful, the soundtrack is
nicely atmospheric (sea sounds and traditional music), and the story is well
told, its magical elements shown with a refreshing absence of high-tech special
effects. The acting seemed fine to me, especially the little girl's
grandmother. (I didn't get the name of the actress.)

The audience where I saw the movie last night was mainly adults, but it does
seem designed as a movie for children, and I would think kids would like it.
It's a simple story, well told, with an attractive child protagonist.

    I saw the movie a few weeks ago. I agree with .0's description and
    assessment. It's a rare movie in that it's suitable and entertaining
    for viewers of all ages. Clean, simple and magical!

I believe that would be Eileen Colgan, who was seen most recently in
Widows' Peak.

As I mentioned in another note, I recommend this movie wholeheartedly; the
only reservation is that really young children may get impatient with the
measured (but not slow) pace of this movie.

	My daughter (7 1/2 years old) was enthralled. The slow pace helped
because it minimized any problems she might have had with the thick Irish
dialect.

	This movie is a real accomplishment for John Sayles, showing that
it is possible to make something that is really excellent for children and
adults.

789.4too slow to be greatMAIL1::NAIRSun Apr 09 1995 19:372
    I thought the cinematography was great, but the movie was just too slow
    moving.
789.5Excellent film seen by far too few peopleKOLFAX::WIEGLEBHorses are fine, so are booksMon May 22 1995 23:009
    I caught this one on Saturday. An excellent film for adults and for
    children. .0 really sums it up well.

    Based on an extremely limited data set, I'd disagree that this moves
    too slowly for the kids to enjoy. The two kids in front of me,
    perhaps 7 and 5 years old, seemed thoroughly engrossed and spellbound
    throughout.

789.6Lovely piece of filmmakingRNDHSE::WALLShow me, don't tell meMon Jun 12 1995 10:0320

    Went to the Capitol in Arlington to catch this (the Capitol, by the
    way, is about as nice as a movie palace-to-multiplex conversion gets).

    I don't think I'd try to classify this movie by age bracket -- there
    are things in it for everyone. The little girl is the story's main
    character, but the others aren't there just for her to play off of.
    I think only two kinds of people would be disappointed by this:

    	1) People who don't like happy endings.
    	2) People who don't like fairy tales.

    Number 2 especially, because this is not a slice-of-life story.
    There's a strong but subtle fantastic element in the plot and if that
    kind of thing makes you gag then this is not for you.

    I'd recommend a viewing at full price, though I'm not sure how easy it
    will be to find outside of large urban areas now.

789.7Can you tell we *liked* it? :-)USCTR1::WOOLNERYour dinner is in the supermarketMon Jun 12 1995 12:1412
    I agree with .6 completely (even about the Capitol in Arlington; saw
    "Adventures of Priscilla..." there, & the theater was worth the drive
    from Shrewsbury).

    We've seen Roan Inish *three times* and, if it's still in Arlington
    this week, we'll take my Mom to see it.

    BTW, the soundtrack is out on CD; lovely. (If I could have one wish it
    would be that some dialogue might have been included [as was done in the
    "Pulp Fiction" soundtrack] but I'm not complaining.)

789.8Try West NewtonMPGS::FARRELLMon Jun 12 1995 13:576
    Note that a few weeks ago it was on at the West Newton cinema. One of
    the smaller screens in that cinema. Night we saw it I'd say there was
    about 60 people there, so it's probably still there.

789.9Finally out on video.SALEM::PORTERMike Porter, 285-2125, NIO/A19Wed Dec 27 1995 07:1212
         It finally came out on video. While the video stores carry dozens
    of copies of popular new releases, the video store in my town only had
    one copy of Roan Inish. I had no problem renting it; I guess it just
    isn't going to be popular.

         I loved it. What a beautiful movie. My wife was so-so. My 12 year
    old son got bored with it an disappeared into his room. (Why didn't I
    think of that before?) I taped it and will recommend it to my 16 year
    old daughter. I bet she will like it. Good movie for all ages (except
    for hyper boys).

    Beautifully filmed, serene, almost dreamlike.

    But very, VERY slow. You definitely need to be in the mood for it.
