Didn't think he was particularly "manic" in "The Double Helix"
or "Mr. Frost" either (which had the potential to be a very
good movie, but fell apart, in my opinion). Agree that his
humorous and understated performance in "Jurassic Park" was
among his best.
A very sensual man and quite funny.

| I can't really pinpoint exactly why I dislike this guy. I guess he
really comes across (to me) as a major nerd in most everything I've
seen. I couldn't even watch him on Letterman last night.

| I thought he was excellent in a movie with Michelle Pfeiffer where he
played an aerospace engineer who couldn't sleep. Can't remember the
title, but it was directed by John Landis who (among others, including
Jim Henson) had a cameo role as an Iranian thug.

| Thought that Jeff was prehaps at his best in 'THE TALL GUY', the Mel
Smith directed comedy also staring Emma Thompson & Rowen Atkinson,
circa '89 (?)
This British film was originally to be titled 'CAMDEN TOWN BOY', but
was changed for the U.S. market as few Americans would know where, or
what, Camden Town was...

| I liked him as "BrundleFly" in THE FLY... (to Gena Davis' character
after accidently removing his own ear...) "Oh - My Ear - I'm Scared"
I also believe he deserves a mention in "Earth Girls are Easy"
although I really only liked Julie Brown's (Because I'm Blond)
performance in it.

| First movie I ever saw Jeff Goldblum in was "Nashville", the Robert
Altman epic. He was terrific in that, and I have enjoyed most of the
movies he's made since, especially "Into the Night" and a movie from
about 1979 where he was the owner of a disco. I forget the name of
this movie, but it featured the Commodores (with Lionel Ritchie) and
Donna Summer singing "The Last Dance".

I was going to check my book last night but forgot.

| Another Goldblum movie I really like is 'Vibes', costaring Cindy Lauper
(yes, "girls just want to have fun" and all that).
I can't argue that this is a great movie, but it is unpretentious and
entertaining. Rent it on a Friday night and make some popcorn, and
you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Goldblum plays an archaeologist, who has the ability to touch an
object and know what has happened to it. He's trying to do his job at
a museum in a serious manner, but the museum head wants him to use his
psychic ability to perform parlor tricks for the board of directors.
Cindy Lauper is a very low class, very low self-esteem type who has an
invisible friend, a ghost who tells her useful information from The
Beyond.
They make a terribly unlikely pair. They're manipulated into a trip to
Inca ruins in Andes. Romance and psychic conflict ensures.

.12 Agreed. The whole thing just works somehow. Lauper and
Goldblum are both very enjoyable in it.

I answered my own question ... no, it was Richard Benjamin.

I hated Vibes. I thought the acting was terrible and the story line
weak. Cyndy Lauper was interesting to watch, but not a very good
actress. Peter Falk was good.

Well, this is quite a case of differing tastes - Your Milage May Vary in
the extreme. I thought the only really bad thing about Vibes was Peter
Falk with his dirty raincoat and his annoying Columbo manner. I didn't
mention Falk's performance in note .12 because I wanted to encourage
people to see the movie.
The story line is weak, but there are some good scenes, like the one
where a group of psychics talk about their abilities, mostly trying to
impress each other.
Lauper is clearly not much of an actress, but I think her role was
customized for her abilities, so I thought she did OK, and I found her
entertaining. Much like Madonna in "Desperately Seeking Susan": a narrow
character portrayed successfully by someone with very limited ability.

That's the scene I always envisage when I think of the movie.
It's a good one. ;>
I didn't like Falk in it either. In fact, I think his role
in "Murder, Inc." was his best and there hasn't been much to
rave about since.

I thought Vibes was a hoot. This was a funny ridiculous movie
I've seen it a few times cause I bought it quite a while ago
I don't care for Goldblum but I Want to like him cause
we've all seen WORSE actors than him...I think its a thing
that he's done some good stuff in the past and maybe he'll
have a hit sooner or later....

I wonder if this movie predates "The Witching Hour" by Anne Rice. One
of the main characters there had that ability. It's probably a common
"power" which crops up in different books and movies.
