775.0. ""Leon" (film) & Luc Besson (French director)" by JGO::MARTIN () Thu Mar 02 1995 10:37

LEON and LUC BESSON (LEON'S DIRECTOR)

This french guy is the leader of the french young generation
directors. Because he really protects is private life, he is not a star
himself but every of his films is waited by a lot of fans now. He has
done 6 films (I think) by now:

    Subway, with Christophe Lambert and

Sorry about that, technical incident happened

Subway, with Christophe Lambert and Isabelle Adjani (4/5)

    Kamikaze,	(3/5)

Le grand bleu (the big blue, out France), (5/5). A veritable cult film
by the french youth. I really love it

Nikita (La femme Nikita, out France. A remake called point of no return
was done in the US). Perhaps the best of all. This was also a large
succes in France. To see absolutely.

LEON, I really love it too. Filmed in french and english (I've seen
both versions), just go for it!!!

I would really have some reaction from US people about it. I think
BESSON is really a great director and LEON a great film. I'm probably
gonna see it a third time.

Saw LEon in the Uk last week - really good movie. Best I've seen in a
    long time.

How did the english speaking parts work in ther French version, were
they subtitled? Was each scene actually filmed twice - once in French
and once in English? Sounds like a lot of work!

Actually, I think they've filmed every scene with talking people twice,
in both languages. It is clear that in the english version, the people
really say what you here, same as in the french one (I am sure about
it). So there is now other solution...
Anyway, the result is very good. If you've liked it, you should also
watch NIKITA (available in video in England, subtitled). It's (a bit
less violent), but as good (some say even better). In this film, the
same actor than LEON appears (Jean RENO), in a very similar role
(Victor, the cleaner). BESSON said in a interview in France, that he
was facinatd by this character, and that LEON was more or less a film
focused on this character, or on a similar character.

Was "The big blue" the movie about the two divers ?
I saw it a long time ago, but remember that I was very impressed.

    "Leon" was great, too.

Yes, "The big blue" was about the two divers. It really impressed me
too. There was even in France something like a "Le grand bleu"
phenomenun during the summer following the film. A lot of (stupid)
people tried to dive like in the film and some accident happened.
However, this is based on a real story and the competition between two
divers has really existed (but they didn't die in it).
This film started a real motion in the french youth, something
comparable to what happened with "Dead Poet Society" (sorry if I'm
wrong with the title). This was also helped by the marvellous sound track.
It was composed, as for Nikita and Leon, by a french musician called Eric
Serra. BESSON and him are friend and are working perfectly together (I
think). This was particularly true with "The big blue" which is full of
    silent scenes of diving.

In this film, the second diver is played by Jean RENO, the guy playing
LEON. He is the prefered actor of LUC BESSON and appeared in every of
his films (sometimes for a very short role like in Subway).

Is "Nikita" the movie about the girl that is forced to do a "Cleaner"-Job
to escape from prison? As far as I remember (if it's the movie I think
about right now) it's one of the most exciting movies ever.
Remember the scene in the bathroom in Venice...

Rosanna Arquette is the girl-friend of one of the
competitors/friends divers. She desperately try to stop the suicidal
tendances of diving of her boy-friend. At the end, he cannot leave out
the water and decide to stay in the abiss. The diving system is started
by Rosanna Arquette saying "Go and see my friend" to him.

Just a note for US noters: Lon was released here as "The Professional."

Luc BESSON's first movie is "Le dernier combat" (The last fight").
It has been filmed in black and white, there is only 2 or 3 actors
and there is no word all along the movie, just noises.
Jean RENO also plays in this one, which subject is the fight of two
    people after atomic war.
Note that the same way RENO plays in all Luc BESSON movies, music is
done by the same guy, Eric SERRA.
Luc also did something called "Atlantis", a film about life under the
water without actors, just sea animals.
