773.0. "Bonnie & Clyde" by HELIX::MAIEWSKI () Tue Feb 28 1995 19:02

I saw Bonnie and Clyde on TNT the other night. It was the 1st time I'd seen
it since it 1st came out back in the late 60's. The movie stars Warren Beatty
and Fay Dunaway as a real life couple who robbed banks in Texas and near by
states in the depths of the depression.

The two stars did a really fine job but they are somewhat upstaged by the
supporting cast. Gene Hackman plays Clyde's brother and the part of his wife
Blanch is also very well done. Is that the same woman that plays Rosanne's
mother? They look something alike. Another good character is Clyde's side kick
C.J. Moss.

The music is outstanding and includes what is perhaps the 2nd most famous
Banjo part in movie history, "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" by Scroggs and Flats
which is played during car chases.

The movie is pretty violent. It was one of the 1st movies to be somewhat
realistic about showing the results of people getting shot. Tame by today's
standards but pretty shocking for it's time.

It's also emotionally draining. I remember being somewhat stunned the 1st time
I saw it on the big screen. Even on TV, knowing what happens it can really draw
you in and make you feel the hopelessness and yet the freedom as the gang drove
around shooting up the west with "fate" written all over their faces.

A classic but not for everyone. Launched the careers of three of the biggest
names in the movies today.

  **** out of 5,
  George

Yup, that's Estelle Parsons (the same one in Roseanne) that played
Blanche, and she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her
    performance.

Gene Hackman can upstage anyone! I just recently saw a screening of
Young Frankenstein and the seen with Hackman as the blind man has got
to be one of top three funny moments in the movie. And we're talkin' a
    pretty funny movie!

GH never lets me down. I always enjoy watching him.

    Minor nit-banjo-pickin'......

The song "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" was performed by the group Flatt
& Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys and was written by Earl Scruggs -
arguably one of the most influential 5-string banjo players ever. Earl
is definitely MY favorite 5-string banjo player!

"Dueling Banjos" may have been bigger, but FMB is a much better banjo
    tune IMO.
