| Chris,
I couldn't have agreed with you more. This is one excellent film, if
your looking for blood and guts stay far away from this one but if your
looking for a slice of life, with people who you can relate to then
check this one out.

758.4 | Sounds excellent! | GMASEC::CLARK | | Thu Feb 02 1995 20:59 | 18 |
| Wow! Three "excellent" reviews in a row. The reviews here have
certainly peaked my interest and hope to view it soon. I cannot recall
ever seeing Newman do other than an outstanding job. Newman story
alert! One of my friends worked for a tree trimming outfit and they
got a job at Newman's home in Ct. While limbing out the tree, one large
branch landed on a little tree (which Newman's wife had just recently
planted). Buried that sucker. So, my friend got "elected" to go to the
door and let the Newmans know about it. Paul Newman came out, took a
look, and said, "YOU guys are telling my wife. Not me." So, in they
went, explained the whole story, and then Newman said, "Sit down and
have some lunch with me". My friend said the rest of the afternoon was
sitting in Newman's living room while his wife, Joanne Woodward, kept
supplying them with more sandwiches and beers. The one comment my
friend made was about how down-to-earth Newman is and thought he was
just a great guy to talk with, etc. Definitely hasn't let Hollywood go
to his head. Everytime I see Paul Newman all I can think is , "hey,
it's Cool Hand Luke!" My all time favorite Newman film. "I'm a-shaking,
boss! I'm a-shaking!"

758.5 | Very disappointing movie | TNPUBS::NAZZARO | UMass to the Final Four! | Mon Feb 13 1995 13:36 | 29 |
| See this movie as a tribute to Jessica Tandy, perhaps, or to see
another bravura performance by Paul Newman, but as a film, this is a
lightweight bit of nothing. I was extremely disappointed.
Bruce Willis overacts, as usual. His character's actions make no
sense. For that matter, nmost of what Newman does in the movie doesn't
make any sense either. Jessica Tandy is sweet and kind and does a nice
job being herself.
A few more pointed comments after the ff
1) Do we know why Willis ignores his wife? Does that make any sense?
2) A bit too coincidental for me to have the lottery ticket come in.
3) Leaving the kid outside for two minutes was not a big deal.
Comparing it to abandoning his son at age one was a bit much.
4) Why didn't he drive up to "Rub" instead of following him on the
sidewalk? Was that the only way the writer could think of to get
Newman thrown in jail?
5) Was his life so great in Bath that Newman wouldn't have gone to
Hawaii?
4.5 out of ten - 2 for Newman, 2 for Tandy, .5 for gratuitousness

758.6 | I give it ***/***** | EVMS::HALLYB | Fish have no concept of fire | Sun Feb 19 1995 13:19 | 20 |
| Whence came the title? I see this movie as sort of Newman's version of
"The Unforgiven": stars showing their age to an audience of boomers
who themselves are starting to feel pains of age.
Spoilers follow:
> 5) Was his life so great in Bath that Newman wouldn't have gone to
> Hawaii?
This is even more unbelievable than the trifecta coming in. I would
have enjoyed a twist at the end of the movie: scene shifts to Hawaii,
Melanie Griffith holding a baby in her arms on a porch in a ramshackle
house somewhere in the low rent district, Newman driving up in an old
red Ford pickup rusted from all the rain...just like Bath...
6) And who was surprised to hear the amusement park pulled out of the
deal? That was telegraphed right from the start.

758.7 | A fine Newman vehicle | EVMS::MARION | Those thunderdrums are calling | Mon Feb 20 1995 11:40 | 18 |
| I loved this movie. Not for the action oriented, the only action is
in the mind and heart of Sully, an aging man who's eschewed
responsibility all his life. Late in years, he finally comes to know
his son and grandson, and to feel some responsibility and care for
them.
I felt that Newman played his part to perfection. It could easily
have turned maudlin or absurd, yet he played his part with a quiet
dignity that kept me interested in his growth.
I love the strange, friendly rivalry with Bruce Willis' character,
and I love the Doberman. And Jessica Tandy was fine in her last
performance. In fact, the only moment that choked me up was in the
final credits where they dedicated the film to her.
I give it ****.5 out of *****.
Karen.
