One of the girls went on to become a famous murder mystery writer. Her
identity as the elder of the two girls was only recently revealed.

| Is this the Ann Perry story that was in the papers and magazines a
couple of months ago?

I think her name is Sexton now, not Perry.

| A little late, but what the hey.
I saw this yesterday and _loved_ it. It's exactly the kind of movie
that I get swept away by. It was strange and different and
unpredictable and surprising and interesting and well written, acted
and directed. I agree with .0 it is hard to rate because it's so
different but I highly recommend that everyone see it. It's a trip!

| In Barbara Kingsolver's Animal_Dreams, she writes that when children
don't get love, they hold onto magic. This film takes that thought to
the extreme.
We saw this over the weekend. I'm still disturbed by it. The
film-making was superb, with imaginitive direction, special effects
that added to the story rather than detracted (those poor Borovnian
extras!), *stellar* acting, and clear story-telling.
But it's haunting, and it's sticking with me. The solution to their
problem is a murder, and they approach it with horrifying ease and
careful planning.
Highly recommended. The two young actresses are fantastic.

| Good Movie (IMO). But then again, I've always liked the bizzare ones.
Neither will I try to rate this one. It's strengths were in classes
not really competed for by the "front runners". I'd put it in the same
catagory (if you will) as "Vincent and Theo" and "Steppenwolf".
Cinematography and Screenplay were interesting and unusual. Acting was
superb and yet haunting. ANd the storyline is hardened because it was
based on fact.
If you like the light stuff, comedies, "happy-enders", and predictable
action flicks avoid this one. But if you're not afraid to explore
something different and disturbing, check it out.

[spoiler]
Growing up as a lesbian in conservative New Zealand in the 50's must
have been, shall we say.. "awkward". Not too tough to figure out why
these two had to build a fantasy world to live in. The written
epilogue said that they were eventually released under the proviso that
they never see each other again. I wonder.
Most memerable scenes:
- Close-up of Paul's dad when he was singing to the mackerel.
- The class photo when Paul puts her head down (a picture's worth 1000)
But the best by far was..
- The ultra closeup of the doctor's mouth as he studdered out the word
"homosexuality"
