IQ stars Meg Ryan as the mathematician niece of Albert Einstein (Walter Matthau) and Tim Robbins as the bright young mechanic who falls for her. She, alas, is engaged to a stuffy reseach psychiatrist; she doesn't have faith in her own abilities and feels her contribution should be to marry a genius and have genius children. Albert and his cronies decide the mechanic is a better choice, and help him masquerade as a genius to pique her interest. You can tell how things go from there; the plot isn't strikingly original. But it's well-executed, and Ryan and Robbins are a wonderfully sweet couple. I like the fact that the movie isn't afraid to have intelligent people making intelligent conversations. There are also two great scenes where physical comedy lends itself to intellectual endeavor. Worth full price if you like sentimental, funny romance, or you need a good date movie.

I like all of the key members of the cast, and the premise sounded charming, so this was on my to-see list. A fantasy film, as silly and unlikely as "Pretty Woman" or "Sleepless in Seattle", but very funny and with some wonderful performances. Walter Matthau as Einstein was brilliant, and his gang was a riot. I particularly liked the bit with the tree (it reminded me of my ex-husband, but that's another story). These guys alone were worth the price of admission. Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan were adorable (although I hated her hair; irrelevant, I know), and Stephen Fry (as Stephen Fry) was perfect as the entirely soul-free and unsympathetic psych prof/boyfriend. And when people look at this film and say "where did they shoot this? It's gorgeous!", we all yell "New Jersey!" dcl (ex-NJ)

Saw this movie at the new Framingham 14 cinema complex. This is a very impressive building, with a candy counter a city block long, closed circuit TV showing previews, its own souvineer store, etc. but mostly it has an incredible traffic problem. DO NOT GO on a Friday or Saturday night, unless you plan to sleeep over! Anyway, to the movie. Very sweet, cute, funny, nice, pleasant, and all those other adjectives. I enjoyed it a lot, my wife slightly less so than me (to my surprise). Matthau was great as noted previously, but Tim Robbins gives another subtle, rich performance. He is definitely one of the top actors working in the movies. NAZZ

Where's this place in Framingham? Right on Route 9? The souvenir store sounds good, if they stock movie memorabilia like posters, mugs, nude photos of Meg Ryan [8^)], etc. GTI |
