I'm looking to rent a movie based on the ballet "The Nutcraker". My 3 1/2 year old daughter recognizes the music all the time from having watched Fantasia so much. She also loves the book The Nutcracker. There are probably a few versions out there, so I was looking for some opinions on good ones and bad ones. Also whether the version is the ballet version or a story version. I know last year (I think) Macaully Culkin (excuse spelling) was in a version of the The Nutcraker. Has anyone seen this one?? Is it story or ballet or both?? Thanks for all your help. Patty

The Macaulay Culkin version is the traditional ballet with the Balanchine choreography. What I've heard is that it was well-performed but badly filmed. I'm fond of the Baryshnikov version myself, which is not the traditional ballet. The role of the Sugar Plum Fairy is vastly reduced, and Clara is a much more important character. Probably more appealing to girls near Clara's age (approaching puberty). Younger kids will probably prefer the traditional version. |
