700.0. "The Santa Clause" by SWAM1::MILLS_MA (To Thine own self be True) Mon Nov 21 1994 11:27

We took our 5 year old son to see this yesterday, and you'll need a kid
to enjoy it (it can even be your "inner child" ;^))

It is very Disneyesque, of course, with the obligatory shameless
tearjerker scene, and not an ounce of suspense. Anyone over 5 will know
exactly where this is going. Having said that, we all enjoyed it for
what it was, a Christmas movie.

The nighttime flying scenes were beautiful as were the houses, ala Home
Alone. Tim Allen was, well Tim Allen. The little kid who playes his son
was good, and a CUTE kid. The rest of the cast, who includes Judge
Rheinhold (sp?), is adequate. No Oscar material but a good movie to
get you in the Christmas spirit.

    Mind candy.

Does this movie make a definitive statement as to the existence of Santa
Claus? My son (6 years old) and daughter (9 years old) disagree on this
topic, and I would like to take them both to see it, but not if the movie
will disillusion one of them...

700.2IT depends....SWAM1::MILLS_MATo Thine own self be TrueTue Nov 22 1994 11:2822
I'm going to put the answer to this one behind FF, in case I give
    something away (yeah, right!)

At the beginning and middle of the movie, most of the adults are
certainly going around saying there's no Santa Claus, especially Tim
Allen, despite the fact that he's turning into him. At the end,
however, all's well and Tim has become Santa Claus and the other adults
in the movie know it as well.

If you want to take both your kids to see the movie, I would just
caution your nine year old, who will probably see through the movie,
not to give it away. Your son, depending on how firmly still believes
will feel vindicated, or be a little confused. My son is still a form
believer so the fact that Santa was played by Tim Allen was explained
to him as the fact that the real Santa is too busy to make movies.

    Hope this helps.
