678.0. "Sequel to The Commitments?" by TNPUBS::C_MILLER () Mon Oct 17 1994 16:19

Somewhere here, I thought, there was mention to the sequel to
"The Commitments" -- does anyone know of the name and if it is
    available on video? Thanks

It is called "The Snapper," and is discussed in 489.*. I don't believe
it is available on video, at least here in Canada.

Stephen - FYI... I saw "The Snapper" in the video store on Sunday... I
don't know if you would classify this as an actual "sequel". Yes, the story
is written by the same author (Roddy Doyle?) but it does not revolve around
the same characters, namely the band from The Commitments. This one is
about Jimmy's (the manager from The Commitments) sister and the rest of the
family. I haven't seen it, so I don't even know if Jimmy is in the film,
but I don't think he is. I think the only actor who is the same is the one
who plays the father - can't think of his name.

My local video store said it wasn't out yet... "The Commitments," "The
Snapper," and "The Van" are currently being sold in 1 volume, as "The
Barrytown Trilogy." All involve members of the same Dublin family.
I'm pretty sure there's no other film "sequel" to "The Commitments"
    around.

I doubt if there will ever be a sequel to "The Committments".
Roddy Doyle (the author) has said he's not interested in one
and without his involvement I can't see it happening.

He wrote the original book back in 1988 and, although he used some
of the characters in later works, the Committments band never
appeared in any of his books since then (The Snapper, The Van and
    Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha).

Wasn't "The Van" a short-lived, lousy summer movie based on the song by
same name, circa 1977? Probably not the same thing ;-)

Nope...

The Van is set during the summer of 1990 when Ireland played in the Italia '90
world cup and portrays the frenzied hype that surrounded the event. The father
of Jimmy Rabbitte (Commitments' manager), buys an old chip van (ie a mobile
french fries stall???) and attempts to make a living out of selling food of
dubious quality and avoiding the health inspector at the same time.

Chronologically it occurs after "The Snapper", since Sharons' 'snapper' is
mentioned a few times. Good book.

I've heard that there was a film being made based on this book, haven't seen OR
heard anything since though!

Colm Meeney is the name of the actor that played the father in both The
Commitments and The Snapper. I only hope that they get him to play the part
again. It suits him so well that as I read the book I was visualising him acting
out the part!!

I found a copy of Roddy Doyle's "The Commitments" at our local library.
It's a quick read, very good, and I would love to see this adapted on
stage. The only nit about the book is having to read their singing.
This went on for pages and throughout the book; but what did I expect
the whole story revolves around soul music.

I found a copy of this video and rented it. What a pleasant surprise,
all this "La, la, la..." stuff turned out to be pretty good music. My
sister even bought the CD. I recommend this movie to adults (the
    language is pretty rough).
