673.0. "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" by DECWET::JO (Mary had a little lamb, with mint jelly. Dot Warner) Fri Oct 07 1994 19:12

Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a 1963 french film.
it has Katherine Deneuve in it. the whole movie is sung. all dialogs
are sung and there are also songs that you would most likely recognize
if you heard it. when i realized that they will be singing the entire
movie, i thought it silly, but as i got into the story it wasn't so
silly. it's a love story and for people who like love stories and have
not seen it, it's a must i think. the version i saw was in french with
    english subtitles.

i am looking to acquire a copy of this movie to keep. i want the
subtitled version. they made a dubbed version which is not what
    i'm looking for.

it's old, i know. it's been quite a project trying to locate a source
for it. i know of only 2 places that have a copy, the heathman hotel
in portland, oregon (they maintain a video library and it's free to
hotel guests. you just call them downstairs and tell them what movie
you want to see and the pipe it into your room. this is where we first
saw the movie). the other place is scary video (i think that's the name)
a video rental place in seattle.

the video was released by USA Home Video at one time. if anyone can
point me to a catalog, store, or have any info on USA Home Video, i'd
appreciate it. my husband and i have been looking for a copy of this
movie since we saw it last spring.

i would appreciate any kind of assistance i can get. thank you very
    much.

673.1Sun Coast VideoTURRIS::EASI::GEENENIllud cape et ei fibulam adfige!Fri Oct 07 1994 19:429
Do you have Sun Coast Video in your area? Here in the San Francisco
Bay Area almost every shopping mall has one, or another store just like
it. I have had great luck finding many obscure movies there. And the
couple of times they could not get a movie for me because of their
distribution agreements, they gave me the name, address, phone number,
etc. of the movie's distributor, who I could contact to get it.

    Hope this helps,
    Carl

yes we do have a newly opened sun coast video here in bellevue
square. the help was not very helpful to say it kindly.

the movie is listed in the big book of videos that they have.
i was told that they could not get the video from whoever they get it
from and i was not given the info of the movie's distributor to call.

would you mind asking at your branch for me? the local branch
disappointed me so much that i haven't gone back since.

No, I wouldn't mind at all. I'll call later today and see what I can
find out for you. Meanwhile, lodge a complaint with Sun Coast Motion
Picture Company management about the poor service you got in Bellvue
Square. Bad service is bad business, IME.

The Sun Coast branch I frequent is not able to get a copy of the video,
but was able to ascertain that it was available through them at one
time (USA Home Video, $39.99). None of their distributors is able to
find a copy. However, not all is lost. You can write/call/fax USA
Home Video (owned by Live Home Video Inc.) and see if you can get a
    copy direct from them:

I've not verified any of the above information, but hopefully it's
    still valid.

    Good luck,

    hi Carl,

673.8You're welcomeTURRIS::EASI::GEENENIllud cape et ei fibulam adfige!Mon Oct 10 1994 19:286
I hope they can get it for you. Please let us know how it turns
out. My wife has reminded me that another possible source is a store
that sells used videos. There are boocoo of them over in SF. Perhaps
your area has a few as well.
