Barcelona is a yuppie-preppie romantic comedy, written/directed by the person who did Metropolitan, 4 years ago. An American salesman in Barcelona, with his navy-officer cousin, dabble in Spanish women and Spanish politics. It's often funny, and for an American comedy, the script is sophisticated. But it's unnaturally bookish, and the interpersonal chemistry is flat. The plot lacks the sort of exhileration needed to push the humor along. The cast is handsome and the Barcelona location is pretty. The two Spanish female leads are played convincingly by a Brit and an American. But what do I know about Spain? Brian

I couldn't get excited about it either, although it has some very funny, very insightful bits (about American men dating/marrying European women). Tyler Nichols, who plays the lead and narrator, is an actor with a lot of potential. He also has Jeremy Irons' facial bone structure which makes him easy to look at for 90 minutes. dcl | |||||

I went to a matinee and wanted my money back within 15 minutes. The (print) advertising for this movie was completely misleading. It is *not* a romantic comedy in the flavor of "Four Weddings and a Funeral." I wouldn't even watch this on cable. |
