606.0. "Actors and Actresses list from Internet" by 22680::GEOFFREY () Wed Aug 10 1994 07:21

Hello everyone, a couple of years ago I found two lists in the old
Movies file. One was a list of actors and the other was actresses.
It was a real helpful way to look up movies by the actor's name.
Both of them came out of Internet newsgroups.

Are these lists still being maintained, and are they accessible
from Internet, or does someone keep a copy on Easynet?

    Any and all pointers appreciated.

  Connery, Sean

Real Name:

  Connery, Thomas Sean

Biography:

Despite his childhood rear familying in a blue collar, Connery
found fame and fortune as the suave, sophisticated British
agent, James Bond. After six Bond films, Connery
yearned to break from the Bond image, and eventually
earned an Oscar as veteran Chicago cop, Jimmy Malone, in
THE UNTOUCHABLES. A genuine movie star, his co-stars
  often complement his professionalism.
Connery continues to be at his best when he plays
  no-nonsense characters.

Trivia:
- _Thunderball_ (qv) was originally going to be the first 007 movie, but legal
wrangles with its co-author lead to _Dr. No_ (qv) being chosen instead.

- Author 'Ian Fleming' (qv) wanted his cousin 'Chrisopher Lee' (qv) to play
Dr. No. See also _The Man With the Golden Gun_ (qv).

- The budget was only $1,000,000 but when costs over run by $100,000
United Artists wanted to pull the plug fearing they would never recoup
  its outlay.

- Fleming originally asked 'Noel Coward' (qv) to play the part of Dr. No,
Coward replied in a telegram ``Dr. No? No! No! No!''.

- Actors considered for the lead role included: 'Cary Grant' (qv),
'David Niven' (qv), 'Trevor Howard' (qv), 'Rex Harrison' (qv), and
  'Roger Moore' (qv).

- 'Sean Connery' (qv) was chosen for the part of 007 after Cubby Broccoli's
wife saw him in Disney's _Darby O'Gill and the Little People_ (qv).

- After the film's release in Italy, the Vatican issued a special communique
expressing its disapproval at the film's moral standpoint.

- The voice of Honey Rider is not that of 'Ursula Andress' (qv).

- Connery is morbidly afraid of spiders. Shot of spider in his bed was
originally done with a sheet of glass between him and the spider, but when
this didn't look realistic enough, the scene was re-shot with stuntman
  'Bob Simmons' (qv).

- A painting of the Duke of Wellington, stolen in 1960 and never recovered,
can be seen on the wall of Dr. No's headquarters.

- The rights to the famous theme song were bought from 'Monty Norman' (qv) for
a ridiculously low sum of money, and subsequently appeared in many later Bond
  films.

- The Japanese office of United Artists originally translated the title as
``We don't want a doctor'', and even had posters printed with that title.
The mistake was discovered at the last moment.

- 'Margaret Nolan' (qv) (Dink) also appears in the opening credits sequence.

- 'Nadja Regin' (qv) (Bonita the nightclub dancer) previously appeared in
  _From Russia with Love_ (qv).

- 'Sean Connery' (qv) hurt his back during the fight sequence with Oddjob in
Fort Knox. The incident delayed filming and some say that Connery used the
injury to get a better deal out of the producers for the next 007 film.

- The image of the body coated in gold paint became an icon of the sixties
when it appeared on the cover of Life magazine.

- Connery has only seen the film twice: once at its premiere and again
when his granddaughter insisted he watch his favorite Bond film with her.

role, but the people of Monaco were not happy with the idea of their princess
  playing a compulsive thief.

Summary:
During a routine US space mission a manned American rocket mysteriously
disappears while in orbit. The Americans naturally suspect the Soviets
and threaten retaliation. However, the British are more cautious
after one of their tracking stations indicates that the space craft
may have come down near the Sea of Japan. James Bond is sent to

in similar circumstances, 007 has only a few days to locate the

Trivia:
- The budget was the then astronomic sum of $9,500,000 ($1,000,000 of
of which was spent by 'Ken Adam' (qv) in his crater set).

- For the first time the story of a 007 film bears little resemblance to
the novel it is based on.

- The face of Ernst Blofeld is revealed for the first time (in the guise
  of 'Donald Pleasence' (qv)).

- The female leads 'Mie Hama' (qv) and 'Akiko Wakabayashi' (qv) both appeared in
  _King Kong versus Godzilla_ (qv).

- Whilst in Japan, 'Sean Connery' (qv) and his wife are hounded by the
international press. During news conferences the press insisted on referring
to Connery as James Bond. The last straw comes when local newsmen attempted
to photograph him in a rest room. To ease the tension the producers
remove his contractual obligation to do one more 007 movie, despite being
  offerred $1 million.

- The book title comes from a 17 century poem by Japanese poet Basho, it reads
``You only live twice / Once when you are born / And once when you look death
  in the face''.

Trivia:
- After the failure of _On Her Majesty's Secret Service_ (qv), EON was
desperate to get 'Sean Connery' (qv) back to save the series. When he
refused, the producers considered 'Roger Moore' (qv), then
'Timothy Dalton' (qv) before unexpectedly signing an unknown American actor
'John Galvin' (qv). UA chief, David Picker, was not impressed with the
choice of Galvin and the order went out to get Connery at any price. Connery
was finally lured back with an unprecedented deal making him the highest
paid actor to date. The final contract involved Connery getting $1.25
million up front, 12.5% of the gross and a commitment from UA to finance two
non-Bond films of Connery's choice. Connery later donated his fee to the
  Scottish International Trust.

- Actresses considered for the role of Tiffany Case included:
'Rachel Welch' (qv), 'Jane Fonda' (qv) and 'Faye Dunaway' (qv).
'Jill St. John' (qv) had originally been offered the part of Plenty O'Toole
but landed the female lead after impressing the director 'Guy Hamilton' (qv)
during screen tests. St. John becomes the first American Bond girl.

- The original plot had 'Gert Frobe' (qv) returning as Auric
_Goldfinger_ (qv)'s twin and seeking revenge for the death of his brother.

- The death of Bond's wife Tracy was originally planned for the opening
sequence of _Diamonds Are Forever_ (qv), but was later added to the end of
_On Her Majesty's Secret Service_ (qv) to ``tidy up lose ends''.

- Upon release, this film broke Hollywood's three day gross record.

- 'Willard Whyte' (qv) is obviously based on 'Howard Hughes' (qv). Hughes,
however, played a more substantial role behind the scenes allowing EON to
film inside his casinos and at his other properties. His fee was reputed to
be one 16mm print of the film.

Goofs:
-There is a chase scene between Bond in a "moon buggy" and a bunch of Fords
careening across the desert. In one shot, one of the Fords shoots over
a sand dune. In the lower corner of the screen, you see what appears to be
one of the moon buggy's wheels bouncing away. Next shot, the moon buggy
drives away, with all wheels intact.

-At one point James Bond is driving a car down an alley that ends at a gap
between two buildings that is too narrow to drive through normally. Somehow,
Bond manages to get the two left wheels up in the air and drives through the
gap at a slant. When the car comes out from between the two buildings, the
two RIGHT wheels are in the air. (The intervening sequence, where the car
rides on all 4 wheels again before lifting the two right wheels, was edited
out of the TV version of this movie).

Quotes:
[Tiffany Case opened the door almost nude]
Tiffany Case: I'll finish dressing.
James Bond as Feter Franks: Oh please don't, not on my account.

Felix Leiter: I give up. I know the diamonds are in the body, but where?
James Bond: Elementary, Dr. Leiter...

Driver: The stiff, ehm, the deseased back there... Your brother, Mr.
  Franks?
James Bond as Peter Franks: Yes, it was.
Passenger: I got a brother.
James Bond as Peter Franks: Small world.

Plenty O'Toole: Hi, I'm Plenty.
James Bond: But of course you are...

[James Bond is lucky with the dices while gambling]
Plenty O'Toole: You handle those cubes like a monkey handles coconuts...

[Plenty O'Toole is thrown out of the window by some goons perhaps from the
10th floor, and lands in the middle of the hotel's swimming pool]
James Bond looking down: Exceptionally fine shot.
Goon: I didn't know there was a pool down there.

[A couple of oil workers open a hatch down to the oil pipe, and James Bond
  comes up to their surprise]
James Bond: Thank you very much. I was just out walking my round and I
seem to have lost my way...

James Bond: Good morning, gentlemen. ACME pollution inspection. We're
cleaning up the world, we thought this was a suitable starting point.

Goofs:
-In the very last scene, after Robin(Sean Connery) has shot his last
arrow, you see three apples on a window board. Two are rotten, the
third one seems to be a Golden Delicious. It`s doubtful whether this
variety was known in 13th century England...

Goofs:
-The scene where the bandits are trapped in the cage
by "Evil" over what appears to be a bottomless chasm. They make their
escape by cutting small strips of rope off of the support rope and
makeing a long rope from the fragments. Then, one of the bandits is
lowered out of the cage and is swung up to the next cage. During the
scene where they are trying to get the swing high enough for the
guy on the end of the rope to grab ahold of the other cage, you can
easily see the floor of whatever set they are on. The bandit appears
to be only a few feet off the floor. Oops...

Goofs:
-Sean Connery is involved in one of those fights where they are outside
with spacesuits on. As he is struggling, you can CLEARLY see his bare
arm where the sleeve of the spacesuit is supposed to be attached to
the glove. Considering the way people are blowing up whenever they are
exposed to space elsewhere in the film, this probably wasn't intended.

-At one point Connery gets a bad guy cornered and "interrogates" him
with his custom shotgun. Both men are approx. 4 meters apart and still
Sean manages to miss the baddie twice. Some special non-expanding ammo?

-Large steel plate thrown by Sean Connery flutters down -- in vacuum.

Trivia:
- The film's title was originally ``Warhead'' but was changed and become an in
joke on 'Sean Connery' (qv)'s refusal to play 007 ever again. He was
eventually paid $5 million, which made him the highest paid British actor to
  date.

- 'Orson Wells' (qv) was originally going to play Blofeld, and
'Trevor Howard' (qv) was to appear as ``M''.

- Author 'Kevin McClory' (qv) (co-writer of _Thunderball_ (qv)) had won the
legal right to make his own 007 film as long as production started after
1975 and the story was based on _Thunderball_ (qv).

- McClory enlisted the help of 'Len Deighton' (qv) and Connery when writing the
script, prior to Connery agreeing to return as Bond.

- An early plot had SPECTRE attacking Wall Street from the sewers of New York
  in giant mechanical sharks.

- There is a rumor that 'Timothy Dalton' (qv) is visible in the casino. Dalton
  would later play James Bond.

- REMAKE-OF(Thunderball)

Goofs:
-There is a scene where Bond and Felix swim across to have a look at
the villain's yacht - when Bond first gets into the water he has no
head mask with his scuba diving suit, but when he exits, he is seen
taking it off - guess somebody forgot about Connery's toupee.......

Trivia:
- 'Christopher Lambert' (qv) spent time with a dialog coach, developing an
  accent which sounded unspecifically foreign.

- MacLeod says ``It's a kind of magic'', which is the name of the Queen album
which contains songs from the film. The Vietnam vet who tries to machine-gun
Kurgan has the Queen song ``Hammer to Fall'' playing in his car.

- The castle where Connor MacLeod lived is the same castle used for the
interior shots for _Monty Python and the Holy Grail_ (qv).

- Non-American versions of this film include a WWII flashback sequence showing
MacLeod meeting Rachael, where he tells her ``It's a kind of magic''.

- SEQUEL(Highlander II: The Quickening)

Quotes:
[Just before the McLeod clan goes to war]
Kate: Angus, you'll keep him in one piece, ya hear?
Dugal MacLeod: And we all know what piece that is!

Ramirez: Why does the sun come up, or are the stars just pinholes in the
  curtain of night?

Ramirez: If your head comes away from your neck, it's over!

Candy: Hi, I'm Candy.
Kurgan: Of course you are...

Kurgan: Forgive me father, I am a worm...

Kurgan: It's better to burn out, than to fade away!

Kurgan: So now it ends...

[Repeated line by Ramirez, The Kurgan and Connor MacLeod]
Connor MacLeod: There can only be one!

[Looking at the body lying next to its head]
Garfield: What do you think the cause of death was, Lieutenant?

Connor MacLeod: You only have one life! Value it!

Summary:
Federal agent Elliot Ness assembles a personal team of mob
fighters to bring Chicago crime boss Al Capone to justice
using unconventional means during the mob wars of the 1920s.
This fictionalized account of the arrest of Al Capone

they were unhappy with the result. Hoskins departed, and was paid $200,000.

- The scene where Malone picks up a dead body, holds it against the window,
  and shoots it was ad-libbed.

- References to _Potemkin_ (qv).

Goofs:
-When Sean Connery is talking to Kevin Costner in his (Connery's)
room, Connery's shirt collar alternates between being buttoned and
and unbuttoned in the several shots of that scene.

-When the knife-man is sneaking into Sean Connery's apartment, there is a POV
shot as the camera approaches a window. The camera and cameraman are clearly
reflected in the window. (He is wearing a white shirt and a red cap, as I
 recall.)

Quotes:
Capone: Somebody messes with me, I'm gonna mess with him.

Jim Malone: You wanna get Capone? Here's how you get him. He pulls a
knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send
one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way. And that's how you get
  Capone!

[Last lines]
Reporter: Word is they're going to repeal Prohibition. What'll you do
  then?
Eliot Ness: I think I'll have a drink.

Trivia:
- Begins with a shot of a rock in Utah which is reminiscent of the Paramount
Pictures logo. See also (_Raiders of the Lost Ark_ (qv), and
_Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom_ (qv))

- Shows origin of Jones' fear of snakes in _Raiders of the Lost Ark_ (qv).

- 'Harrison Ford' (qv) cut his chin in a car accident in Northern California
when he was about 20. In the movie, this cut is explained by young Indiana
Jones cutting his chin with a whip. See also: _Working Girl_ (qv).

- When making _Star Wars_ (qv), 'George Lucas' (qv) owned a dog named
  ``Indiana''.

- The dog barking when young Indy passes with the cross in his hand is an
Alaskan Malmute, the same type of dog the Lucas's owned in the late 1970s.

- Walter Donovan was played by 'Julian Glover' (qv), and Donovan's wife was
  played by Glover's wife.

- DIRTRADE(Steven Spielberg): [music]

- SEQUEL-OF(Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom)

Goofs:
-(In the scene at the beginning) Indy is swinging off the Coronado via
a hook on a line. He distinctly has the Cross of Coronado in his left hand
in the previous scene. When he grabs onto the hook, the cross disappears,
and when he lands in the water, it's in his left hand again.

-At the beginning of the movie, just before young Indy escapes into the train's
caboose, the train is seen going through a mountainous area with forests. He
disappears through the box in the floor, and when the guy with the hat looks
out the back door of the caboose, there are no more mountains ... the terrain
is flat like the place where Indy boarded the train in the first place!

-The first shot of the adult Indy as he raises his head shows blood trickling
down his chin from one side of his mouth. In the next and subsequent shots,
the blood is dripping from the other side.

-In trying to find his father. Indiana Jones goes thru his father's mail.
A close up of the letters shows one with a stamp not issued by the U.S.
Post Office until after the time frame of the movie.

-After being chased by the Germans, Indy and his father come to a sign that
is posted by a fork in the road. One road goes to Berlin, the other to
Venice.
This sign is unlikely, because Venice and Berlin are roughly 400 miles apart.

-In the sequence in which Indy's clambering about on the outside of the tank,
it's impossible for him to have gotten hung up on the gun barrel the way he
does -- the end of the barrel's already been blown apart, causing it to
blossom like a metal flower which is too large for Indy to have passed that
loop of equipment strap over even if he'd wanted to.

-After the tank goes over the cliff, the turret of the tank falls off and away
as the tank hits the ground. However, when Connery and the rest look over the
edge at the tank, the turret is in place on the top of the tank.

-As the camera angles change on Sean Connery right after the Hatayan tank
falls from the cliff, you can see marked differences in the way Connery's
 beard is trimmed.

-While spelling out the word of God, Indy steps on a letter, accidentally
breaking the letter behind his foot. In the next shot, the letter is intact.

-The letter he stepped on was a J, which was wrong because Jehovah is spelled
Iehovah in Latin. But the reason for the spelling difference is that Latin
*has* no letter J. So there shouldn't have been a J tile in the first place.
(It might conceivably have been an ornate T, but doesn't look much like one.)

-Hitler writes his name with the wrong hand when he autographs the diary.

-After Connery's character has blown away the rudder of the plane,
the rudder is seen virtually intact in a following long shot of the plane.

Quotes:
Indiana Jones: I'm like a bad penny, I always turn up.

[Indiana Jones is asking Henry how he could've slept with Elsa]
Henry: I'm as virile as the next man.
Indiana Jones: Dad, I was the next man!

[Henry, Indiana Jones, and Sallah are discussing why Henry calls Indy
  'Junior']
Indiana Jones: I like 'Indiana'.
Henry: We named the *dog* 'Indiana'.

Trivia:
- Rumour has it that 'Kevin Costner' (qv) wanted to use a British accent, but
director 'Kevin Reynolds' (qv) didn't want him to. Supposedly, Costner
would affect the accent when he was arguing with Reynolds, but not when they
  were in agreement.

- CAMEO(Sean Connery): King Richard. Connery got $250,000 for two days
work. He donated it to charity.

Goofs:
- When Robin returns to England and throws himself on the ground, he offers his
hand to his Moorish slave. In a subsequent shot, he is offering his other
 hand.

-The Sheriff asks his maids to see him tonight, one at 10:00, the
other at 10:15. In the 12th century, they didn't have clocks.

-There is one scene where the thieves are casting arrowheads out
 of *lead*!

-there is a plaque in the wall of the castle near where he and Marion are
standing. It happens just before the bad guys come to give chase.

-When Sherwood Forest is initially shown (a distant shot) it appears to be
an coniferous forest, and yet when Robin and party are shown within, the
 forest has become deciduous!

-When the outlaws' hideout in Sherwood Forest is attacked 'by surprise' there
are a large number of heavy cataputs, which 'shell' the hideout. Given the
density of the forest and the size of the catapults it probably would have
taken over a week to get them in position.

Quotes:
Azeem: The hospitality in this country is as warm as the weather.

Sheriff of Nottingham: Locksley, I'm gonna cut your heart out with a
  spoon.

Sheriff of Nottingham: ...cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans,
no more merciful beheadings... And call off Christmas.

Sheriff of Nottingham to a wench: You! My room. 10:30 tonight.
Sheriff of Nottingham to another wench: You! 10:45... And bring a
  friend.

[Talking about how many men that are about to be ambushed]
Robin of Locksley: How many?
Azeem: 20.
Robin of Locksley: 20?
Bull further away: How many?
Robin of Locksley: 5!
Robin of Locksley to Azeem: He can't count anyway.

Friar Tuck: This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which the Lord
intended a more divine means of consumption. Let us give praise to our
maker and glory to his bounty by learning about... BEER!

Mortianna: ...recruit the beasts that share our god.
Sheriff of Nottingham: Animals?
Mortianna: From the North!
Sheriff of Nottingham: You mean.. CELTS! They drink the blood of their
  dead.
Mortianna: Yolk their strength.
Sheriff of Nottingham: Hired thugs... Ahh brilliant.

A couple weeks ago I happened upon a WWW page where I could look
up a movie by title, then click on the title and get a summary
    	of the movie.

    	Now I can't find it.

Does anyone know where it is? Thanks!!

I know someone posted a pointer to a good web site full of movie/actor
facts recently, but I can't find it anywhere...

What I was trying to find out is - I know that Samantha Mathis appeared
in Broken Arrow and Pump up the Volume, but did she also appear in a
film called 'Jack and Sarah' with Richard E Grant? IF she did - she
    looked very different....

    Anyone know?

The Internet Movie Database: One of those sites that makes the
    whole thing worthwhile.

http://www.msstate.edu/Movies/ will send you to the U.S. mirror
site. There are also sites in other geogs.

At the risk of repeating myself too often here, the Internet Movie Database
has moved to a new location (as of last March -- shows how often I get in here).
It's now at

	http://www.imdb.com (that's Internet Movie DataBase)
or	http://www.moviedatabase.com (same site, easier to remember)

There's identical mirrors in various geographic areas, as before; at the
moment, the two are

	http://us.imdb.com
	http://uk.imdb.com

but more are planned. The E-mail server is at [email protected] and the
FTP sites are still in a motley assortment of places around the world; best
to look at http://us.imdb.com/interfaces.html for the current list.

And this is probably the last time I'll mention it here, to avoid conflict of
interest problems (I'm a stockholder of IMDb, Ltd).
