| Where is your friend from? If your friend is from the States
then used videos from London are *not* going to be playable
on your home VCR here.
England uses PAL format, and we use NSTC (sp?) ....

Possibly Sweden uses PAL too ... ;-)
The U.S. use NTSC.

How did you know .0 lives in Sweden? By the name?

I always get those letters mixed up! :-(

| And if you still want to buy videos.... Try Woolworths, WH Smith, John
Menzies, Asda, Block Buster, Ritz, Our Price, Virgin Megastore, HMV,
plus many more..... These are all stores that you'll find in any
of the major cities in Britain.

Me thinks you are confusing the physical media type with the
recording type. While the US and British tapes are both
VHS tapes (and will fit in each others VCR's), they are not
compatible.

| If he's going to be in Central London, he'll find
lots of mainstream outlets in the Oxford Street
(Tottenham Court Road tube station) area. The Virgin
Megastore(s) is right there. There will be a WHSmith
nearby and probably a Blockbuster Video. I can't
remember where the major HMV store is, offhand, but
I wouldn't expect it to be far from Virgin, as they
are hand-to-hand combatants.

p.s. recording formats (VHS/BETA) and broadcast
standards (NTSC/PAL/SECAM) are discussed ad nauseum
in TURRIS::VIDEO.

| FWIW, the BBC store (one is located off Picadelly Circus, I
don't remember the street name) also sells videos (ex. Dr. Who)

603.11 | BBC shops | SMAUG::LEHMKUHL | H, V ii 216 | Tue Aug 09 1994 18:43 | 8 |
| There are BBC shops on the Strand side of Bush House
and on Langham Place at Mortimer St. (upper Regent St.,
near Broadcasting House).
The former has videos, books, audio products, and
miscellaneous biz. There is a strong focus on radio
and the WorldService. The latter is pretty much all
videos and tapes/CDs.

603.12 | Alternative video sources? | BPSOF::NEWBERG | | Thu Oct 27 1994 12:02 | 11 |
| I'm living in Hungary and TV is pretty limited on our satellite hookup
so we're always looking for videos to buy. We bought a VCR that plays
any VHS format so whenever we're in the US or London, we buy whatever
is available and cheap. Does anyone know of mail-order companies that
will ship anywhere and specialise in bargain priced videos? If anyone
out there has any other ideas, even cast-offs from people who are
running out of room, please let me know. Winter is pretty depressing
and TNT is repeating too many really old war movies ;^)
Thanks,
Amy

the largest discount club I know of here in the UK is
BRITTANIA. I'm sorry, I don't know the address.
