Doesn't exist (yet). The music rights weren't properly negotiated and
the film can't be released on video in the US or Europe. Reputedly,
there was a Japanese release a long time ago, but this is no longer
available. Bootlegs are available, however, and there is a constant
rumor that the soundtrack rights have been negotiated and that the
film will come out. Given that the soundtrack is approximately
equivalent to those awful music of the '70's/80's/disco that are sold
in 30 minute infomercials at 2 a.m., I would think that this is now
possible...
If by similar you mean something other than the usual Anime or Disney
then you're going to have to look hard. Try Ralph Bakshi though he is
very uneven. The most interesting thing on the horizon is a rumored
collaboration between Jean "Moebius" Giraud, Akira Kurosawa, and the
animation team from 'Akira' which will animate Giraud's 'The Airtight
Garage.'

Won tickets on a local radio station to see Heavy Metal with it's
digitally remastered soundtrack. Always wanted to see it on the big
screen. Anyone care to comment? Like or not?

Strange flick this one. Also, very difficult to find on VHS.
I like it, especially the soundtrack. Black Sabbath's
"The Mob Rules" is there I believe.

I think your right Kev about Mob rules being on the soundtrack. I
think the movie is pretty strange too. Gotta have a strange sense of
humor to enjoy this one.

583.7 | Never officially released ... | ZPOVC::GEOFFREY | | Wed Mar 20 1996 00:35 | 11 |
| re: .5 "very hard to find on VHS"
The film has never been legitimately released on video, because the
creators never locked down the requisite music rights from all the
bands and artists. There are a number of pirated and "foreign" versions
floating around, but I've never seen one that had any decent quality.
It shows up on cable every now and then, maybe one day I'll get a shot
at a decent SVHS copy ...

A friend of mine picked up a fine VHS tape of HM out in New York
City somewhere. The quality is all there as well as some rather
nice packaging.

583.9 | available on video from Critic's Choice | ORION::chayna.zko.dec.com::xanadu::eppes | Nina Eppes | Mon Apr 15 1996 18:53 | 11 |
| I recently got a Critic's Choice Video mailorder catalog, and
it features "Heavy Metal" ("First Time on Video!" it says).
$17.77, catalog number LRRCA074653, "avail. 6/4/96".
Critic's Choice Video has toll-free ordering 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, 1-800-367-7765.
Just fyi. (I have no interest in Critic's Choice; I'm just a
customer.)

| RE: Lyle "Great Movie"
What were ya hopped up on goofballs or what?
I saw this last night off of "Movie Pix" (taped) and other than the
cool tunes & cool animation. This movie bites! Maybe it didn't bite
but something along those lines...if they only did more with the story.
Now here's where all those ex-hippie, pot-heads will freak on me...
This movie was probably only cool to half of the weedsmokin' public
because they were "seeing the music" and "feeling the colors". The
movie made me think again of why everyone likes "The Doors".

|
<---------------- Well, let me offer you somw explaination on why you
feel 'this movie bites'
1. You're way too young to even recognize most of those bands in the
soundtrack.
2. The total budget for this movie was about the same we make a year.
(yeah, all that!!!)
3. You have to look at the movie from a comical point of view. If you
need to use some... shall we say 'alternitive to being sober'... then
the movie would be better. %}
You gotta get into the entire scope of movie.
It's not as bad as you may think. Give it another chance. Remember, it
was done around 1980.
