552.0. "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" by SSAG::LARY (Laughter & hope & a sock in the eye) Sun May 22 1994 02:10
Two Big Thumbs Down on this one!
What a muddle. Some books aren't meant to be movies. The prose that was so
playful in the book sounds alternately pretentious and moronic coming out of
the mouths of visible characters. And I pity anyone who hasn't read the book
who tries to make sense of this movie.
Uma Thurman isn't bad as Sissy Hankshaw, neither is John Hurt as the Countess.
Pat Morita gives the Chink a good go, but its an impossible part to play. Rain
Phoenix is quite bad indeed as Bonanza Jellybean, and Lorraine Bracco as
Delores Del Ruby sounds just like Mrs. Henry Hill...
The bast part of the movie is at the very end, where Tom Robbins narrates the
"paper bag" scene from the book (at least I think its in the book, my copy's
out on loan). No dialogue, just Robbins' voice and some visuals. They should
have done the whole movie that way.
