542.0. "Pack of Lies" by VMSDEV::HALLYB (Fish have no concept of fire) Tue May 03 1994 17:42
Note 540 ("Cops and Robbersons") reminded me of a movie with a similar
plot, but entirely different storyline.
"Pack of Lies" stars Ellen Burstyn and Teri Garr in an early '70s
semi-Cold-War-Spy-Tale set in a suburb of London. The cops, I mean, the
appropriate British counter-espionage service, suspect Ellen Burstyn's
best friend (Teri Garr) and her husband of being Soviet agents. They
move into Ellen's home and set up a 24-hour "watch" waiting for a
known Soviet agent to call on the neighbours. The cops don't want
anyone to know what they're doing so Ellen's family has to act as
if everything is normal. This proves to be quite a strain on Ellen,
especially as how Teri is her best friend and the two visit almost
daily. Ellen (and her husband) don't really believe all the charges
that the cops level against such good neighbours. Tension mounts, as
the Soviet agent seems not to show up. Who's telling the truth, and
who's not whom they claim to be?
Juliette Lewis fans may want to compare Ellen's daughter (played by a
teenage Sammi Davis) with the Cape Fear (remake) "daughter" character.
Excellent performances by both women. On video. Worth seeing on a
rainy, preferably foggy, day.
