527.0. "Tim Robbins - a new talent?" by 51847::SANDGREN (Keep it simple) Mon Apr 25 1994 09:25

Within few days I've seen a couple of films with Tim Robbins,
previously unknown, at least to me.

He's a remarkable talent - I saw him in a film with Holly Hunter,
I don't know the original title, but it could be something like
The Firecracker Girl or Beauty Of The Town; and then in 'The
Player', a quite different role I'd say. And I would say he has
a great career lying in front of him.

He seems to be able to adapt to whatever role he's told to play -
that is, he is so convincing and natural in his playing. Also he
doesn't look like anyone else, long and thin with something like
a boy's face, and still with grownup manners...quite a persona-
	lity!

I believe he was the young pitcher in Bull Durham. That movie was one of
my top 10 favorites of all time.

re -.1: in 'Miss Firecracker', which IMO was an immensely good
film with character playing from TR as well as Holly Hunter and
Mary Steenburgen, he was the brother (or cousin), who got out
from the lunetic hospital. His first appearance in this film was
where you saw him collecting dead dogs from the roadside (must
	be a _wonderful_ job :-P )..

This guy obviously has been more in it than I knew of - and yes,
I see something familiar with Nicolas Cage also - is it inno-
cense, honesty or something else? Hard to describe.

Hmmm, I taped 'Jacob's Ladder' last night, looking forward to
	that one...

	Thanks for all the inputs,

	Poul

'Jacobs Ladder' left a major impression on me. When I daydream I
still see scenes from it. Really intense and thought-provoking.
Some people hated it though... McCauley Culkin has a bit part in
it if I can remember - and he's NOT irritating :-)

He's also going to be starring in an upcoming movie based on one of
    Stephen King's books . . .uh . . damn, I forgot the title - one of the
stories from Night Shift, I think - The Mangler, maybe?

'Bob Roberts' was a truly terrific film, and 'The Player' and 'Eric
the Viking' were terrific. Remember the Beserker dad giving advice to
    the beserker son?

dad	: "Now, you must never let the red rage comsume you until..."

son : "Until the heat of battle!!! I *know*!! I KNOW!! I'ver heard
it all a *million* times!!! Arrrrrghhhh!!!" ( proceeds to beserk :-) )

Actually, I think its him and Morgan Freeman in the movie version
of "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption", the Hope Springs Eternal
section of Different Seasons. Bet they pick another title... :^)

Thanks!! I totally forgot which one - they are making a movie from
the Mangler, though - I'll be looking forward to 'The Rita...' much

Eric The Viking is one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life.
It's slow paced, the acting is bad, the plot is stupid, and Tim Robbins
plays a moron. Just thought I'd warn anyone who hasn't seen it, and
had any thoughts of renting it!

    re .18, there's a difference between playing a moron, and being a
    moron! :-) (just kidding, Kevin)

Actually, I have a problem with the Tim Robbins plays dumb guys. I
can't stand his characters when they're supposed to be dumb. I had a
similar problem with Cadillac Man where he played a character that was
so stupid I couldn't stand him. He should stick to playing intelligent
characters. He doesn't do stupid well.

Erik the Viking was a wonderfully funny movie ( just wanted to put that
in, in case anyone was thinking of renting it :-) )

Tim Robbins played the not-so-intelligent boyfriend of a girl who was
sleeping around with her boss - he takes everyone in a car dealership
hostage. He does play a moron, albeit an sympathetic moron.

Lorna, check out The Player, or Bob Roberts for evidence of TR's
intelligence ( and acting ability ) - if you get upset by idiocy, how
do you manage dealing with traffic in Mass.? :-)

re .21, I've seen both Bob Roberts (which I liked) and The Player
(which I didn't like as much, but Tim Robbins did a good job). So far,
I've liked him best in Bob Roberts and Short Cuts (as the jerky cop).
I don't think he'll ever be one of my favorite actors, although I like
him better than I used to.

I can't *believe* you liked Erik The Viking! I thought it was really
    bad. :-)

I also thought Eric the Viking was terrible, but I enjoyed Cadillic Man
a lot. Not only for Robin Williams and Robbins (You're a no sh*t kinda
guy, aren't you? Uh, YEAH - I'm a no sh*t kinda guy, right!), but Lori
Petty as Williams' girlfriend was wonderful. Some surprising little
twists and turns to the plot moves the story from predictable to
    entertaining.

But no matter what other movies Robbins makes, he'll always be Nuke
    LaLoosh to me!

Cadillac Man was terribly underrated. Just about every review I saw of
it called it mediocre to bad. But I loved "Cadillac Man", right down
to the perpetually barking Pomeranian :-)

Didn't Williams have two girlfiends in that flick that were arguing
over him? Or was it an ex-wife and a girlfriend? I can't remember.
Is Lori Petty the one with the dark hair who was always holding the
    dog?

"The Nanny"). Real strong New York accent.

Actually , he had two girlfriends and an estranged wife. Lori Petty
was the one who designed her own outfits, Fran Drescher was the one
with the extremely nasal voice, and Pamela Reed was the wife.

yah... I loved it when both Lori and Fran were being interviewed on
camara and -of course- Fran was holding the pomeranian (who was still
barking) and Lori told her to "shut that dog up!"

also when Robin walked into the home of his ex-wife and it sounded like
he was walking in on her having sex, but she was really on an exersize
