510.0. "The Baby of Mcon" by 49439::RHOTON (John Rhoton @AUI - DTN 754-2345) Thu Mar 31 1994 06:08

		The Baby of Mcon

			UK 1993

		by Peter Greenaway

The film of a play in a theatre whereby the delineation of the actual
play from the spectators and the actors behind the scenes is deliberately
blurred.

It is the story of a child born to an old woman in a time of wide-spread
infertility. His virgin sister declares herself mother and by offering
further miracles is able to enrich herself through the use of the child.

Greenaway's intent is to focus on the exploitation of children both in
the middle ages and in the present.

Like his other films I would not say that I enjoyed "The Baby of Mcon"
but I do like that he makes me think.

The Baby of Mcon - rape and mutilation in multiples of 13
----------------------------------------------------------

With "The Baby of Mcon", British director Peter Greenaway has managed to
produce yet another highly original but ultimately frustrating piece of
cinema.

This rather peculiar film tells the story of the ruthless exploitation of
an alleged virgin birth in the French village of Mcon. Staged as a play
within the film, the plot is often hard to follow, and the meaning of it
all is further obscured by the emphasis on detailed religious symbolism.
The director's obsession with numbers and catalog-making is frequently a
source of irritation, since it doesn't seem to add anything of value to
the story.

Good actors and impressive artwork cannot fully compensate for the lack
of substance in this film, which, in my opinion, is Greenaway's least
enjoyable to date. Although original and sometimes funny, the film is
simply not interesting enough to get away with such an incoherent plot.
Few people will bother to attempt to decipher this work, even fewer will
succed, and I seriously doubt that anyone will find it worth the effort.

I agree that this is one of his more demanding films to watch. Like
you I think I prefer some of his earlier work but some of my friends,
who are more excited about Greenaway that I am have tried to convince
me this is his best to date...
