504.0. "Against The Wall" by 16134::ALCORN_R (SEMPER FI) Mon Mar 28 1994 11:50

HBO ran their most recent house film and I found it to be quite good.
It was about the riot in Attica, some years ago, and was titled
" Against The Wall." The film was directed by John Frankenhiemer and
I felt that it was presented in an even handed maner. Any thoughts
    on the film?

I remember reading Tom Wicker's account, and this movie brought back
the rememberances of the sheer inhumanity on both sides. The
brutalization of the inmates and then when it came their turn the
payback on the guards. Grim stuff!
Scariest parts of the movie: When a guard tells rookie on his first
week in the prison," The inmates already own this place. If it falls
apart, we've got 30 seconds to make it to the street..."
And in the epilogue, when it is noted that prison populations have
grown 300 percent since 1971, and more than 40 federal prisons have
been cited for overcrowding and mismanagement in the last 5 years.
    Attica will happen again.

I did want to add a strong recommendation for this film. With strong
performances from Kyle McLachlan, and Harry Dean Stanton and a lot of
character actors whose names escape me, this is a movie that deserves
to be seen, but be forewarned some of the violence is *very* graphic.
