Sorry, I don't know the English title but it should be something like
"The Smell of the Green Papayas"
L'odeur de la papaye verte
produced 1993 in France in the Vietnamese language using a cast of
lay actors.
Director: Tran Anh Hung
Vietnam in the 50's. A young girl comes to Saigon to work as a servant
for a rich family. A poetic look at the country before its
destruction.
A beautiful film but obviously not destined to be a box-office hit...
Has anyone else seen it?

The Scent of Green Papaya is a Vietnamese film with English subtitles.
It won the Camera d'Or at Cannes for best first feature and an
Academy Award nomination for best foreign film.
The story begins in 1951 with a young Vietnamese girl joining an
extended family as their servant. The family consists of a
grandmother, parents, and three boys. The movie unfolds slowly,
using few words, about a culture very different from ours.
It's a lovely story told in such a slow pace that most viewers would
loose interest, I'm sure. In fact, I watched half of the film one
night and then finished it the other. Although, I would not place
this movies as one of my top 10 favourite movies, it had a certain
appeal.

In the later part of the movie, a young pianist plays a piece
that is so familiar but I cannot identify it. Would anyone know?
I looked for it during the credits....
