455.0. "Whither Margaret O'Brien?" by 4268::DELBALSO (I (spade) my (dog face)) Fri Feb 04 1994 22:58

Whatever happened to Margaret O'Brien, 30's/40's child star contemporary of
Elizabeth Taylor and Shirley Temple?

Is she still alive? What became of her life? She was the subject of substantial
mass-marketing hype in the early 50's as I recall but then seemed to disappear.

Haven't heard anything about her as an adult. She was possibly the best child
actress ever, although she had a tendency to chew scenery. Her scenes in _Meet
Me in St Louis_ were especially memorable.

Ah yes, the little girl who said "When I cry, do you want the tears to go all
the way down or to stop half way?".

Have you tried Halliwell or one of the other standard references? I'm sure
there's a book about Hollywood child stars, but don't have the details to hand.
I'll check next time I'm in the right sort of place.

I'm almost positive she was on the "Love Boat" at least once. ;-)

According to Halliwell's Filmgoer's Companion, Margaret O'Brien carried on
making films into the fifties, but they were all flops. She has done a few
cameos since. I'm afraid I forgot to check whether she is still alive, but I
don't remember seeing an obituary. (I don't want her to die if she's alive, but
it would be good to see a short season of her best films on tv -- maybe somone
will roll them out for her 60th birthday.)

Halliwell gives her one of his cabbage-shaped stars for "being supremely
talented up to the age of ten".

There's no record of her death in the USENET databases, though that's not
definitive. She's only in her 50's, though.

Last listed appearance is in 1981's "Amy" which looks like a real B movie.

How timely. I rented "The Canterville Ghost" over the weekend.
Definitely a first-class crier, this kid.
