446.0. "Faraway, So Close!" by 26608::BRANDENBERG () Mon Jan 31 1994 12:43

Wim Wenders' sequel to 'Wings of Desire' opened Friday at the Coolidge
Corner. It continues the story of the angels Damiel and Cassiel in
Berlin after unification. Unlike the original's introspective and
contemplative script by Peter Handke, the sequel is more concerned with
the physical world and the small acts of good and evil carried out
everywhere in daily life and Cassiel's difficulty in adapting to
such an existence. Wenders' tries to achieve a darker feel by
revealing the ugliness to be found in and around Berlin but also
develops a degree of quiet humor that helps balance the film.

If you see this movie, don't expect the feel and pacing of the original
to be literally duplicated. You will be disappointed. While the
characters are familiar, the construction is quite different.

Stars/Cameos: Bruno Ganz, Peter Falk, Solveig Dommartin, Rudiger Voegler,
Nastassja Kinski, Willem Defoe, Michail Gorbachev, Lou Reed. I can't
remember who plays Cassiel.

One word of caution: The Coolidge's projectors are badly in need of
a visit by the Kings of the Road.

I was wondering what he was upto since Yeltsin took over...
a sort of reversal of Ronnie Reagan's career...

Hopefully he'll be a better actor than Reagan was. MG has more
    charisma, anyway.

Does anyone know if this movie ever opened in the UK? It was all over
France last September, but I never saw it advertised in the UK.

    re .3, compared to Reagan.

I like the music video and the song by U2. Bono is such a cutie.
    *Now* we're talking charisma! :-)

re .6, well, he made my daughter's day, last year, when he posed for a
picture with her, and signed his name and drew a picture on the back of
her denim jacket, so he's okay in my book. He even took the time to
look at some drawings, of him, that she wanted to show him, asked her
name, shook hands with her, and told her it was nice to meet her.

So, Bono may, or may not, be humble, but he's nice to his fans, and
that counts for a lot in my book.

re .6, on the other hand, he's talented, good looking, rich and famous,
    so why be humble? :-)
