442.0. "M.Butterfly" by 49438::BARTAK (Andrea Bartak, Vienna, Austria) Mon Jan 31 1994 05:50
Short overview:
Rene' Gallimard (Jeremy Irons) is a french diplomat living
in Peking, in 1964 with his wife (Barbara Sukowa). He's attending
a performance of the opera Madame Butterfly and is totally attracted
by teh beauty and grace of the singer Song Liling (J.Lone).
Soon he's totally obsessed by her and starts to visit the performances
of the real Chinese Opera, the Peking Opera. He gets to know her music
and her culture and soon they start a love-affair. He risks his
marriage and even his diplomatic carreer and finally loses both...
For Jeremy Irons fans this is a must, he's wonderful as always.
Directed by David Cronenberg.
For those of you who do not want to know the end, i put a Spoiler here:
Finally it turns out, that he has been vicitm of a political intrigue.
He loses his wife, his status and lives in bad conditions, again in
Paris (as he had to leave China, due to the revolution). Suddenly
Song Liling stands in front of his door. He still is in love with her.
She makes him believe that they have a child together and that he
has the chance to get the child back, if he divulges political secrets.
He now has the position as a courier for diplomatic mail and therefore
has the chance to steel some letters.
But the catastrophe is unavoidable. Both, he and Song Liling are
arrested. Now he has to find out, that he has been deceived over many
years - his mistress is a man ! "She" has managed (don't ask me how)
to hide her real sex for all the time. Song Liling returns to China
and Gallimard has to go to prison. He still loves "her". In a very
impressive scene he kills himself.
