438.0. "Golden Globes" by 49438::BARTAK (Andrea Bartak, Vienna, Austria) Mon Jan 24 1994 04:28

I've read that "Schindler's List" has got 3 Golden Globes, and
that Tom Hanks has got one for "Philadelphia" on Saturday.

Has somebody a complete list of the winners ?

438.1a big mystery!11770::DOONANMon Jan 24 1994 08:077
That's the funny thing about the Golden Globes, I've noticed through
the years. The Boston Globe had not a word about the ceremonies in
either Sunday's (understandable perhaps given the time difference) or
today's paper. I never saw a list of nominees before the ceremony, and
I'd be amazed to see a list of winners now. If these are supposed to
be the forerunner to the Oscars, why has coverage always been so
    scanty?

Now I can answer my own question (at least a little bit), as I've
found some more info in today's newspaper:

    Schindler's List best drama
    -"- best director
    -"- best script
Tom Hanks Philadelphia best actor in a drama
Holly Hunter The Piano best actress in a drama
Angela Bassett What's love got to do.. best actress in a comedy
(why was this a comedy ??)

A special price was given to "Short Cuts" and to Robert Redford for
    lifetime achievement.

I also consider it very strange, that there is so little information on
it. I always thought that the ceremony is similar to the Oscars',
that it is in the US TV etc.

Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical was Hugh Grant from "Four Weddings and a
Funeral" - his acceptance speech was very funny. "It's pathetic how much
I'm enjoying winning this" (or something like that) and also the fact that
he *supposed* he should thank a few other people ("he said grudgingly")

I think Jamie Lee Curtis won for something, but we don't get Turner
Broadcasting System on our regular cable up here in Canada so will have to
wait until one of the Canadian channels rebroadcasts the show (usually a
few weeks later) to find out which category it was for.

Looked like "Forrest Gump" was the big winner of the night

    > Best Comedy The Lion King

You're kidding me! A comedy? I'd characterize it more as an animated
musical drama, and not a particularly good one. (the songs were pretty
good, the animation spectacular (as expected), and Jeremy Irons was a
delight as Scar. But the writing and most of the characterizations were
    garbage.)
