The short description: The Blues Brothers as directed by Jim Jarmusch with a Finnish cast. While the style is definitely Jarmusch, this film was directed by a Finn, Aki Kaurismaki. However, since Jarmusch has a bit part in the film, it is clear that Kaurismaki knew whose style he was using. :^) The plot? 8 Finnish brothers want to play in a band, so they leave their frozen tundra and come to America. They end up on a road trip to Mexico to play in a wedding. Not exactly an action film. :^) It is a string of low-key episodes and six musical numbers. The musicianship is very good (although the singing could be improved on a few numbers) and the humor is definitely off-beat. Did I mention that they bring their dead bass player along in a wooden coffin since their father asked them to have him 'see the world'? Or their foot long quiffs and pointed boots? The beginning is in Finnish with subtitles, but the bulk is in English. 1989, released on video, 80 minutes, PG-13 for language. If you like Jarmusch's films, add this to your viewing list. Cheers, George

Saw this movie on the BBC a couple of months ago in a series of cult-films. One of the funniest movies I have ever seen. If I remember it correctly the movie is about a very bad Russian rock'n roll band on tour in the US. Their hairstyle is incredible and the same goes for their shoes. If you get the chance take a look at this film. Donald.

I've seen two other wacky zany features by Kaurismaki, "The Match-Factory Girl" and "La Vie de Boheme", as well as a short music video for the Leningrad Cowboys. Of the bunch, I'd pick "The Match-Factory Girl" -- great moldy color, hilarious Finnish dourness. big happy ending. "Boheme" was a fun spoof of bohemianism that even gave a supporting role to that icon of '60s-'70s bohemia, my man Jean-Pierre Leaud. The publicity for "Boheme" quoted Kaurismaki as wanting to make the stupidest film of all time. Worthy ambition, but it wasn't quite there yet. Ray

Wasn't "The Match Factory Girl" by Aki's brother, who is also a film-maker? I forget his name. - Dave |
