389.0. "Ruby In Paradise" by 7361::HASBROUCK () Tue Nov 30 1993 11:41

"Ruby" is an art-house adult drama loosely based on a young woman's coming
of age.  The critics loved it, but  the public isn't biting.  Too bad.  
If "The Piano" or "Age of Innocence" is sold out, see this one instead.
It's not perfect.  The dialogue is wispy and literary and mashes the 
low-brow story line.  Briefly, a woman moves to Florida to escape an abusive 
relationship.  She struggles with a couple more men and finds solice in
sisterhood, work and independence.

"Ruby" is about feminism and relationships.  It is a serious film that
never gets bogged down with psychotherapy and meanings.  It is preachy,
but just slightly.  It bashes men but then everybody's doing it.
It is refreshingly off-beat.

	I've been wanting to see this, but just haven't gotten around to it since it's only playing in Boston. I wish interesting movies like this would make it to the suburbs! Hope it sticks around a couple of weeks so I have a chance to catch it!! When I read the reviews it sounded like something I would really like. Lorna

	Rented this on video. Good 'slice of life' movie. It's interesting to watch how the central character deals with what life throws at her and is very pragmatic with it all. No excitement or action, lots of focus on personal relationships. Worth seeing.

	I enjoyed this movie very much, especially the acting by the lead actress, Ashley Judd. She used to be on the tv show "Sisters" and is Naomi Judd's daughter. I thought the movie did especially well capturing the atmosphere in a small town that relies on tourists to survive - if you've ever visited one of these places off season, it can be very dismal.
