381.0. ""Les Miserables"?" by 57028::PAYSON (Chris, Rogue Imagineer (c)) Tue Nov 16 1993 16:19

    Hi,

I'm a newcomer to this conference and I'm wondering whether anyone has
seen any video/movie versions of "Les Miserables". I've heard of
several versions floating around out there but have no idea which is
    better/best.

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks,
    Chris

381.1I prefer the one with Fredrick March.17576::PORTERMike Porter, 285-2125, NIO/A19Tue Nov 16 1993 17:3213
Hi Chris and welcome to the Movies. I have seen two or three versions,
non of which was very good (somehow, I doubt that that book can ever be
done justice to, although I am hoping they do a movie version of the
musical.) Anyway, my favorite version is the one with Fredrick March
playing Jean val Jean. I haven't seen it in almost twenty years so I
    don't remember the details.

I do remember that in one version Tony Perkins did a good job as
Javert, but I still preferred the Fredrick March version.

There were rumors at one point that Alan Parker was going to take a
crack at filming this in the wake of the success of the Boradway Show,
but I never heard any more about it.

I'm reminded of an interview I read in a college paper, where they
asked the interviewee her favorite book, and they reported her response
    as "Lame is Rob."

I think this would make a much better movie! ;^)

Maybe there *is* a book called "Lame is Rob". (just wondering: was the
    interviewee blond?)

I guess I come a bit late to the topic. If it is still of interest to
anyone there are at least 3 French film versions of "Les Misrables".
I don't remember their respective director or producer, but I can tell
you what actor was plaing Jean Valjean: Harry Baur (in the 30's, by far
the best version), Jean Gabin (in the 60's, mediocre) and finally Lino
Ventura in the 70's (better than Gabin, but not that great). Any of
those where better in my opinion that the March/Laughton version...
They are all available on VHS (SECAM and PAL, NTSC should be
    manageable)

I realize this isn't really a movie but I was just in London and I saw "Les
Misrables" on stage. It was great.

I was staying at the Lord Mountbatton hotel a few blocks up from Picadilly
Square and it was playing about a block from where we were staying.

Really good acting and some pretty intricate stage work. If you are in
London, it's a definite go see. And it wasn't that expensive.
