362.0. "The Great Race" by DSSDEV::RUST () Wed Oct 27 1993 18:06

I don't have my reference books here so the vital statistics will have
to wait, but I figured I may as well start a note on this movie.

Basically, this is a slapstick comedy (by Blake Edwards?) about an
around-the-world automobile race (in the days when automobiles weren't
likely to make it around the block without breaking down, having a
flat, etc.). It's got Tony Curtis as a very heroic hero (who always
wears white) and Jack Lemmon as a very villainous villain (who always
wears black), and features a truly mind-boggling array of stunts,
    schticks, and multi-level humor.

The tone of the movie (i.e., "wacky, with some unexpectedly subtle
jokes tucked in around the edges") reminded some friends of mine so
much of the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" show that, when they staged a
murder-mystery weekend based on "The Great Race," they threw in
characters for Boris, Natasha, Moose, and Squirrel, along with the
characters from the movie. (It all blended together _perfectly_, which
may help explain the popularity of this flick on the all-time-comedies
    list.)

One of Blake Edwards's better movies. I often greet the morning with a
"Rise and SHINE!? RISE AND _SHINE_!!?"

My favorite chunk is probably the parody of "The Prisoner of Zenda"
which takes up the last third or so. The extended pie throwing
sequence is pretty lame, but Jack Lemmon as the decadent wastrel true
prince is the little fluffy dog's pajamas. And it's a great idea to
have a grumpy evil guy doing the imposture.

I seldom issue directions to start some digitally
initiated appliance without saying or thinking
"Push the button, Max!".

I've never seen this movie - but to any MST3K fans who have seen this movie,
could this "Push the button, Max!" quote be referenced by MST3K when Dr. F
says "Push the button, Frank!"???

It just sound to similar...
