Conference bookie::movies

    "Airplane" was by far the funniest movie I ever saw. Like Star Wars, it
    was the first of its kind, so similar movies today, while they may also
    be funny, can't rival its impact on an unsuspecting world.

    The one in my collection that never fails to leave me laughing - even
    after repeated viewings - is the Laurel and Hardy two-reeler "The Music
    Box", which, incidentally, is the *only* film of theirs to win an
    Academy Award.  There are *so* many great gags in this film all around
    one theme - delivering a heavy piano up a loooooooooong stairway and
    finally getting it installed in a home.

The first film that I could remember putting in this category would
be "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."  (should that be four Mads or five?)

One that hit me particularly hard was the first time I saw "The Wrong Box,"
a victorian-era farce starring Marty Feldman.
It didn't hit me so hard the next time I saw it, which is probably an endemic
feature of "your funniest movie of all times."  You had to be there,
and you aren't ever there again.

    Chaplin's "City Lights" has some incredibly funny scenes, as wellas a

    	acute.  I laughed until I hurt the first time I saw The Wrong Box.
    	It creaks a bit on repeated viewing, but I still remember that first
    	burst.  Likewise I remember diligently counting Natalie Woods'
    	costume changes in The Great Race (19).

    Of "films that meant to be funny," my "funniest" list includes:
    
    	We're No Angels (Bogart version)
    	Young Frankenstein
    	Dark Star
    	The Palm Beach Story
    	
    (These have held up pretty well, too, though they're not as uproarious
    as they were the first time I saw them.)
    
    Of the films that didn't mean to be funny (or at least not funny in the
    places I laughed at), I'd add:
    
    	Giant (though I'm not sure how much of its humor was intentional)
    	The Poseidon Adventure (I *loved* this when I first saw it, watched
    			it several times in a row, and then clicked onto
    			how ridiculous it was)
    	JFK (it kept reminding me of a Saturday Night Live skit.)
    
    And, of course, all those extremely earnest cautionary-documentary
    films for teens, about how failing to dress properly will cause social
    diseases...

    Gee, you must be younger than I. This is a great movie with Tony
    Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Vivian Vance, Arthur
    O'Connell and various guest stars spread around the world. It is about
    a race around the world in cars set in the early 1900s. Tony Curtis
    plays an accomplished person which includes racing. Natalie Wood plays
    a suffragette type who is a reporter and enters the race to report it.
    Jack Lemmon plays the evil entity, assisted by the dim-witted Peter
    Falk. If I remember, it's at least a 3 hour movie. It is very "campy"
    in its presentation.

    NOISES OFF--one of the few movies that had me laughing so hard tears
    were streaming down my face.
    
         A second also for FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF.
    

    That's funny that people are saying Noises Off... as so many people
    I've talked to say they hated it, they didn't understand it, or
    whatever!
    
    If you have ever worked any part of a production, you would appreciate
    this movie... it is a RIOT!!!!!

    I loved the movie "Death Becomes Her".  I thought it was a riot when
    Meryl Streep comes into the study after falling down the stairs and
    Bruce Willis says something like "Stay away from me, there's something

    A**!!"  And the scene at the hospital when the doctor examines her, I
    almost peed my pants laughing!

    I was talking to somebody about the movie "When Harry Met Sally" and
    remembered that I think the fake orgasm scene in the restaurant with
    Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal is perhaps the funniest thing I've ever seen
    in a movie.
    
    Also, remembered the scene from (I think) Annie Hall, where Woody Allen
    interviews a couple and asks them what they see in each other.  One of
    them says something like, "Well, I'm very shallow and so is she." or
    something to that effect.  I think it's hilarious.

    already, you see"... more recently, `Groundhog day' was very funny, and
    from a very long time ago... the film where Laurel & Hardy are doing
    the washing up, and the same plates get washed, over and over again...

    Whenever I'm asked, "What's the funniest movie you ever seen?" the one
    that comes to mind is THE HEARTBREAK KID. This movie got to my funny
    bone like no other. During the first part of the film I couldn't stop
    laughing, it was hilarious.
    
    It's Neil Simon's supreme comedy of embarrassment starring Charles
    Grodin, Cybill Shepherd and Jeannie Berlin. The story is about a Jewish
    boy (Grodin) who gets married (to Berlin) but meets and falls in love
    with a beautiful WASP blonde (Shepherd) while on his honeymoon. 
    
    The dinner scene in which Grodin breaks the bad news to his new bride
    has to be one of the funniest in movie history...INHO
    
    Leonard Maltin (movie critic) gives it *** out of four in his Movie & 
    Video Guide for 1994.
    
    Don't know if this ever came out on video, but if it did - RENT IT.
    I haven't seen it since its release in 1972.

Alan Arkin was in "The In-Laws" with Peter Falk.  I think you are confusing
Arkin with Charles Grodin, who was in "Seems Like Old Times" (among others).

Trading Places ... excellent movie.

    Into the Night.  Michelle Pfieffer and Jeff Goldblum.  With John Landis
    as one of the bumbling arab terrorists.
    
    The movie starts out slow but then builds and builds until you just
    can't stop laughing.  I thought it was great!

	According to the Boston Globe TV Guide, "The Party" with Peter
	Sellers is showing at midnight next Saturday on TNT for those
	who a) have yet to see it
	    b) can get TNT...

To respond to some earlier notes in this string:

Brain Donors got 3 stars.  Monty Python's Meaning of Life also only got 1.  I
can only assume that the Globe's critic at the time didn't "get" Python.

And yes, these stars are assigned by the Globe's critics, not the TV service
(which explains why the Globe rated Point Break 1.5 but the TV listing rated it
3 -- I go with the Globe on this one).

The Calendar section often screws up, though; for weeks, they printed the
summary and stars of Visconti's "The Innocent" when Schlesinger's was showing,
and they usually use the star rating for the original version of Blade
Runner (2) even when the one showing is the director's cut (3.5).  Plus I
don't think they ever go back and add MPAA ratings after the original release.
