346.0. "Aladdin" by RNDHSE::WALL (Show me, don't tell me) Wed Oct 06 1993 10:51

Well, Aladdin hit video just recently, after what seemed like an
endless run. Second-run theaters around here were still showing it at
    the end of the summer.

This is the next in the series of movies that delineates one of the latest
trends in Disney animated films: Mix an old story with a bit of
musical. Movies like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and
Aladdin have been called the successor to the live-action musical films
    of others eras.

I don't think we need to dwell on the story here: an awful lot of
people have seen this movie. There's the poor boy, the princess, the
evil vizier, and the out-of-the-ordinary lighting fixture.

A note to people who've seen the film and loved the songs. The opening
number, "Arabian Nights" has been altered. Disney acquiesced to the
wishes (or bowed to the pressure, depending on your view) of Muslim
people who apparently objected to the lines about cutting things off
and barbarism. It's pretty jarring, because the substitute lyrics
don't flow as well, but what're you gonna do.

Re: .-1, what in particular did you hate about B&B? I thought it was
wonderful! The animation was superb, of course, as were the songs; but
the script and story were just outstanding! Think about it: everything
that happened in B&B was necessary to the story, everything flowed
easily from one event to the next. The characters were consistent, and
their interplay was very convincing. How could you *not* be moved by
the scene where Belle is cleaning the Beast's wounds after fighting off
    the wolves?

Much as I enjoyed Alladin, the story was not nearly as well done. The
characters do things that are not entirely convincing at several
points, and at a couple points in the middle of the movie, the story
really lost its momentum. Most of my enjoyment was from watching the
antics of the genie/Robin Williams. I have to rate this after B&B
andthe Little Mermaid, even tho its animation was the best.

Make no mistake, I liked this movie. What I didn't like about Aladdin
    was:

    * a pretty weak/lame villian, compared to the expected Disney-esque
villian. Poor Jafar, he even got his big Villian Song cut out of the
    movie.

    * The sequence of flying on the carpet through the cave. It *looked*
too slick, too tech, too much like the computer animated scenery it was
(I'm referring all the stuff that was in these scenes save for the
"actors" -- Aladdin, Apu and the Carpet). It didn't fit and for me, it
    wasn't very exciting.

    * The main characters were rather overwhelmed by the very delightful,
but very show-stopping Genie. In comparison, Aladdin and Jasmine were
rather, well, bland. Sort of like the well-meaning Prince Eric in TLM.

That's why I'd rate Aladdin behind Beauty and the Beast and the Little
Mermaid. But I still watched it twice in the theatres and I'll buy the
tape as soon as I can find it at a good price.

The Aladdin video has a preview of the next animated featuer. It will
be called "The Lion King". I'll have to see it, but it doesn't look
very interesting to me. It looks like an all animal story but not as
anthropomorphized (is that a word?) as say, the Jungle Book.

We'll have to wait and see.

I'm truly shocked anyone would find *anything* to dislike about this
    movie!!!

First Robin Williams is hysterical and perfect as the genie!

Second the animation is brilliant! The way the marble floors seem to be
real; with its reflections. The great job of showing emotion with a
something that has no face or voice, the magic carpet!

And I thought the story was nice....it wasn't dragged out with a bunch
    of unneccesary twists.

This has become my favorite Disney film!

Robin Williams was *>THE<* problem with this movie.
He (and I mean Robin, not his genie character) dominated the movie, squeezing
every other detail into the shadows. There was no character balance left.
If an unknown actor had played the part, it might have been all right as is,
but the genie was far too much of over-the-top Robin Williams.

The rest of the characters, except perhaps the carpet, were cliched caricatures.

Beauty and the Beast was better, in at least that the cliched caricatures
had some rationalization, motivation, and depth.

Any chance of you Americans using <FF> to hide spoilers about Aladdin ?

It's not being released in the UK for a while yet...

In response to the person who asked about the next animated feature
from Disney, "The Lion King" (formerly titled "King of the Jungle"), is
scheduled to be released in the summer of 1994. From what I
understand, it was first scheduled to be released this fall, but got
bumped back. The voice casting list looks quite impressive. From what
little preview there was in the tape of Aladdin, it's hard to say what
it looks. The music is being done by (gah) Elton John and Tim Rice.

(sorry Elton fans, the man don't float my boat)

    Cheers,

346.12a cameo by 'the Beast'?35501::ROTHHey, this toothpaste tastes like GLUE!!Tue Oct 12 1993 16:217
Was reading somewhere that 'the Beast' (from Beauty and the Beast) makes
a cameo in this film... as I recal, there is some part where some toys
are being sorted... one of them is 'the Beast'.

Since I've not seen this film yet... can anyone verify this?

346.13Yes, it's true28236::GIBSONTue Oct 12 1993 16:257
Yes, it is true that the Beast does appear in the stack of toys on the
    left near the top.

Also, the two men talking while watching another prince go through the
streets to the palace are the two head animators for the movie.

Sebastian the crab from The Little Mermaid makes a cameo also.

I'll have to look for the Beast next time I watch it.

My (nearly) 3 year old loves this, but although it's OK first time,
after a while the modern Americanism of Aladdin really begins to
irritate. Robin Williams _is_ this film. Clearly, Disney decided they
didn't need to bother with any of the other characters (although Lauren
knows that Jafar is a baddie!).

By comparison The Jungle Book (from my early days) still looks good
and (aside from the Vultures) has little to date it. Lauren likes this
    one too...

I've not seen any of Disney's other recent films, but after Aladin, I
don't really feel I want to.
