Directed by Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) this is a very powerful story of 2 "Gang Bangers" in South Central L.A over the course of 10 years and how hard it is to break the cycle of violence passed by each generation. I thought Scorsese did an excellent job capturing the language and the feel of 'the hood' and the acting is excellent (although I didn't recognize any of the cast). If you liked "Boyz 'n' the Hood" I would recommend this... Now showing on Cinemax Jimbert

I thought it was much more driving and powerful than Boyz in the Hood. The movie moves through generations in that the main character (saw this awhile ago, and can't remember the names) ends up trying to save his own son from falling prey to his former partners gang warfare ways. The movie also has some fantastic advice and dialogue about discovering ones self, and about being black in the inner city. This movie focuses more on how to change yourself than Boyz. Boyz just seemed like a story from the hood. This was a story of how to get out of the gangsta trap. The best movie dealing with urban violence I have seen, and coincedentally, the most un-heard of. 4 out of 5 stars. David |
