Vincent Price died Monday of lung cancer at the age of 82. Price was best
known for his roles in various thrillers although they only accounted for
20 of his 110 films. He originally intended a career as an art teacher and
was enrolled in the masters program at the University of London (his under-
graduate degree was from Yale) when he auditioned for a role in the play
"Chicago" on a dare and won it. He did a lot of work as a character actor
for Fox, including _Laura_, _Song of Bernadette_, _Leave Her to Heaven_,
_Dragonwyck_, etc. He's probably best known for a series of films he made
for Roger Corman in the 60's. Needless to say it's a loss, for his wonderful
voice if nothing else.

Subject: Film director Federico Fellini dies
Copyright: 1993 by UPI, R
Date: Sun, 31 Oct 93 6:00:31 PST
ROME (UPI) -- Italian film director Federico Fellini, who died Sunday
in a hospital after a two-week coma, was viewed as a genius by some of
his contemporaries who called him ``Il Mago'' -- the magician -- for his
ability to draw brilliant performances from amateurs.
But to many professional actors the director's technique was far too
heavy-handed. As one of them phrased it: ``No one stars in a Fellini
picture except Fellini.''
Fellini, 73, suffered a stroke on Aug. 3, 1993, in a hotel in his
hometown of Rimini. He had been recuperating from heart bypass surgery.
He was reported to be recovering some mobility through therapy at a
Rome hospital when he suffered heart and respiratory failure Sunday
(Oct. 17) and lapsed into a coma.
One of his last public appearances was last March, when he received
his fifth Oscar, an honorary statuette for his body of work, at the 65th
annual Academy Awards.
``I really did not expect it, or perhaps I did,'' he said playfully,
``but not before another 25 years.''
Fellini, whose four previous Academy Awards were for best foreign
language film, was unfazed by criticism that he cared nothing for his
actors' feelings, that he preferred them as blank canvasses on which he
could paint his scenes,
He won his Oscars for ``La Strada,'' ``Nights of Cabiria,'' ``8 1/2'' --
an autobiographical film about a director making a picture -- and
``Amarcord.''
His wife, Giulietta Masina, starred in ``La Strada'', as a simple-
minded girl bought for a plate of pasta by strong man Anthony Quinn, and
in ``Nights of Cabiria'' as a prostitute. ``Amarcord'' was a nostalgic
record of his youth in Rimini.
Fellini's ``La Dolce Vita'' in 1959 took the top award at Cannes and
made a star out of Marcello Mastroianni but was denounced by the Vatican
as obscene in its depiction of moral corruption and social alienation.
Catholics were forbidden to see it. After the Milan premiere a man spat
at Fellini. After the Rome premiere he was challenged to a duel.
Fellini accepted that he was a controversial figure with his own
highly individual methods of operating. For example, he stopped filming
for two weeks on one project to give himself time to collect his
thoughts and to draw his own portraits of the kind of faces he wanted,
then sent scouts to find people like them, amateur or professional.
When a newspaper called him ``crudely despotic'' and others accused
him of brutalizing actors and writers, he retorted, ``What am I supposed
to do, stop making films?''
Those who admired him and felt the end justified the means were
matched anecdote for anecdote by those who felt he used everybody and
dropped them as soon as he was through, including some of his closest
aides.
For his film ``Casanova'' in 1980, he signed a famous actor from the
Comedie Francaise who came prepared to give the performance of his life.
``This is what you do,'' Fellini said shortly. ``You look right,
count to three. Look left, count to three. Open your mouth.''
Star Donald Sutherland said Fellini made him file down his front
teeth and wear a completely new nose. He was not given his lines till
the very last moment. Fellini did not want to use Sutherland's voice and
when his aides protested he replied that Casanova wasn't a Canadian so
why should he use a Canadian's voice? -- though he did.
``It's a fantastic experience working with Federico,'' Sutherland
said, ironically. ``He gives one this tremendous sense of security.''
However he admired what Fellini managed to put on on the screen.
During the filming of ``Casanova'' someone stole the film of three
weeks worth of shooting. Fellini and others waited for the ``filmnapper''
to make a ransom demand. But none came and he had to reshoot the scenes,
leaving the production temporarily out of money.
Fellini was born in Rimini Jan. 20, 1920, and educated in religious
schools. In his last year in high school he began leading the shiftless
life depicted in his film ``I Vitelloni,'' which in his case meant
hanging around film studios and theaters.
In 1938 he went to Florence and worked as proofreader and cartoonist
for a comic strip magazine, an experience that was useful later in
making ``The White Sheik.''
Then he went on to Rome where he was a police reporter for Il Populo
di Roma and wrote and illustrated stories for a satirical publication.
In 1943 he married Masina and opened ``The Funny Face Shop'' where
American soldiers could get quick portraits and caricatures.
Fellini by then had a reputation as a comedy writer but director
Roberto Rosselini asked him to collaborate on a serious film project.
That script became ``Open City,'' an international success.
In 1950 Fellini directed ``Variety Lights'' on his own. It was a flop
but it convinced him he was a director and that the successful films
would come in time.
He never looked at rushes -- screenings of scenes filmed the day
before -- delegating to his cameramen what most directors would regard an
essential task.
He had a passion for authentic detail. In Casanova he had costumes
dyed with the same vegetable dye used in Casanova's time.
Fellini kept photographs of interesting faces, many of them convicts.
He said once that he had a better collection than the FBI.
The director and his wife lived for years in an apartment on the Via
Margutta in Rome, near the Spanish Steps. He was a familiar site around
the capital, in his trademark wide-brimmed hat and long scarf, soaking
up the street life from an outdoor table at the Piazza Del Popolo when
he was between film projects.
His work pace slowed in the 1980s, but early last summer before his
stroke Fellini was working on ``Director's Notebook,'' a series being
produced with state-run RAI television.
As one of the country's major cultural icons, the extroverted Fellini
made the most of his status. His nomination as an Italian senator for
life was seen as a reward for his artistic contribution.
Despite international acclaim, ``Il Mago'' remained Italian to the
core and felt he produced his best work in his native land.
``When I leave Italy I lose my bearings,'' he said during the preview
of ``Amarcord'' in Rimini. ``In any foreign country, I feel alone and
without moorings, I don't understand a thing.''

To me, Peter Cushing is Hammer Horror. He made many films for Hammer, often
appearing with Christopher Lee. The one that I always remember is "Twins of
Dracula", where Cushing plays a puritanical village elder who is forced to
take in his nieces (twins), one of whom becomes a bad'un, and there is much
blood, scences with flimsy nightwear, and bad guys getting snuffed.

Lotsa hokey SF movies. I'm pretty sure "The Simpson's" character actor
that does all the lame TV ads is partially aimed at him (isn't his name
in the cartoon "Troy McClure?")

| re .55 Doug McClure died
Sad to hear this as I remember him well from some of the movies already
mentioned.
I was watching Mel Gibson's Maverick over the weekend and thought I
recognised him as one of the card players. Sure enough after searching
hard through the credits I saw him listed.
This must have been one of his last movie appearances if not _the_
last.
