298.0. "Once Around" by VMSDEV::HALLYB (Fish have no concept of fire) Mon Aug 16 1993 13:33

Joe (Danny Aiello) is the father of a family living in Southeast MA.
Having married off his son and one of two daughters, the family's
attention turns to Renata (Holly Hunter) currently underutilized
as a waitress and who has had terrible luck wih men.

Until she meets up with Sam Sharp (Richard Dreyfuss), a hard-working
wealthy (because of his hard work) timeshare condo salesman. Sam woos
and wins Renata and, ultimately ... well, that would be telling.

The main conflict in the movie is that Renata's family doesn't like
or approve of Sam Sharp. He's older than Ranata and isn't Italian.
He's Lithuanian and as proud of his heritage as Joe (Aiello) is of his.
There's a lot of strife within Joe's family because, in spite of all
the problems that seem to come with Sam, he makes Renata happy.

Lots of relationship problems, a few tender moments, but no central
obstacle. This is more of a "woman's movie". It's rated R, but only
because of a bit of foul language; it could have been PG had the
    director so desired.

I saw this a couple of years ago when it was out in the theaters, and
found it quite predictable and boring. It seemed very corny and
    unoriginal to me.

I was SO disappointed in this movie I almost walked out. The director,
Lasse Halstrom's, previous work was "My Life as a Dog". Was this
turkey the end of his brilliant but short-lived career?

He's working on something scheduled for release October 7 called either
"What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" or just "Gilbert Grape" depending on
what source you read. I believe it's sort of like Benny & Joon...
