280.1 | good movie | VAXWRK::STHILAIRE | Food, Shelter & Diamonds | Tue Aug 17 1993 14:47 | 21 |
| I saw this over the past weekend, and I enjoyed it. It's a pleasant,
feel good movie, with a few very funny scenes, and the characters are
likeable. Well, I think Downey's character and the two female ghosts
were the most likeable. The two male ghosts were more bland.
I have to admit that I liked sleepless In Seattle a lot more, though.
I think SIS had more clever lines, and I think it's hard to beat either
Tom Hanks or Meg Ryan for characters in a current day romantic comedy.
They're both extremely appealing, IMO.
However, Heart & Souls was an enjoyable movie, and I would recommend it
as a romantic comedy. Robert Downey, Jr. is a very good mimic, as
evidenced by the hilarious results when the female ghosts took over his
body. I haven't seen Chaplin, but when it comes to physical comedy
Downey is very talented.
It was fun. I could watch it a second time, and still enjoy it. It's
probably one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time.

| Alex and I LOVED this movie too. The tearjerking scene when Downey's
character is 7 was hard to take! :-( But fortunately they cut
quickly to grown-up Downey and heartwarming hijinks.
Minor gripe: Elizabeth Shue (as Downey's girlfriend, small role) leaves
me totally cold. I don't know what it is... can't remember if I've
ever seen her in anything else, but I thought she had zero charisma,
zero magic with Downey.

She was Ralph Macchio's girl friend in Karate Kid I
and she was in some thing called Adventures in BabySitting or something like it.

Sure Jon, anyone can look it up on a Usenet database, how smart would
you be without the database ;-)

| re .4, that explains why she looked familiar. I knew I'd seen her
before. I don't know. I didn't think she was especially unappealing.
I thought she had reasonable, although, not excessive appeal. What's
her name, that played the white, female ghost is more appealing, it's
true. And, I think either Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts would have been
even more appealing, in either role.

| The other female ghost was Kyra Sedgewick, who is Kevin Bacon's wife. I
think she was one of the stars in SINGLES.

| This is NOT for the unsentimental. It's unabashedly sappy, but at
least it's good quality sap. The scenes were Robert Downey Jr gets
taken over compare favorably to Steve Martin's work in _All of Me_.

280.9 | Loved it! | EVMS::MARION | | Fri Jan 20 1995 09:30 | 17 |
| I just rented this last night. Thanks to all of you who responded with
the title and story of this film.
I loved it.
It was heartwarming and funny and just thoroughly enjoyable. One of
the most wonderfully entertaining films I've seen in a long time. If
you're in the mood for sentimental, funny, heartwarming fun, I highly
recommend it. I thought Downey was excellent as both the cold hearted
businessman, and as the slowing thawing person that he should have been
if the ghosts hadn't "abandoned" him. And I agree that the physical
comedy when he's taken over is hilarious.
If you like this sort of film, and are in the mood for something with
a happy ending, rent it now.
Karen.
