Snippet: I caught the beginning of this on one of the cable channels
over the weekend. "John Wayne and James Arness in the same movie???" I
thought, my mind boggling; so I watched some of it.
The premise: The Duke and the Marshall - I mean, Wayne and Arness - are
government agents, sent to Hawaii to seek out and report on those
dastardly communists. [This film seems to be very strongly in favor of
the Committee on Un-American Activities.] The rhetoric flew fast and
thick, and soon overcame my ability to cope, so I didn't watch the
rest, but I must say that it was a shocking reminder of some of the
nastiness that went on in the name of freedom. (If one watched it in
the right frame of mind, possibly with chemical assistance, I suppose
this might be a rough equivalent of "Reefer Madness Meets Joe
McCarthy," but it was a bit too unpleasant for me.)
Still, the idea of pairing Wayne and Arness _was_ amusing. Pity they
didn't do something more interesting with it.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid
and loving it.
A few years ago, I saw it again and
was horrified. It reminded me of the
WWII movies with the "frothing-at-the
mouth" Japanese or the "mother-hating"
Germans.
In case you care...
[spoiler.....]
The James Arness character gets done in
by the dirty communists, who, as we know,
were against truth, justice, and the
American way!!

According to the movie databases, these two were actually paired in at least 4 movies: Big Jim McLain (1952) Hondo (1953) Island in the Sky (1953) Sea Chase, The (1955) No guarantees for accuracy on the above. | |||||
