Snippet: I caught the beginning of this on one of the cable channels over the weekend. "John Wayne and James Arness in the same movie???" I thought, my mind boggling; so I watched some of it. The premise: The Duke and the Marshall - I mean, Wayne and Arness - are government agents, sent to Hawaii to seek out and report on those dastardly communists. [This film seems to be very strongly in favor of the Committee on Un-American Activities.] The rhetoric flew fast and thick, and soon overcame my ability to cope, so I didn't watch the rest, but I must say that it was a shocking reminder of some of the nastiness that went on in the name of freedom. (If one watched it in the right frame of mind, possibly with chemical assistance, I suppose this might be a rough equivalent of "Reefer Madness Meets Joe McCarthy," but it was a bit too unpleasant for me.) Still, the idea of pairing Wayne and Arness _was_ amusing. Pity they didn't do something more interesting with it. -b

I remember seeing this movie as a kid and loving it. A few years ago, I saw it again and was horrified. It reminded me of the WWII movies with the "frothing-at-the mouth" Japanese or the "mother-hating" Germans. In case you care... [spoiler.....] The James Arness character gets done in by the dirty communists, who, as we know, were against truth, justice, and the American way!! | |||||

According to the movie databases, these two were actually paired in at least 4 movies: Big Jim McLain (1952) Hondo (1953) Island in the Sky (1953) Sea Chase, The (1955) No guarantees for accuracy on the above. |
