252.1 | Skip TCC, rent "Used People" instead | 12368::michaud | Jeff Michaud, DECnet/OSI | Tue Jul 13 1993 11:29 | 4 |
| Rented this one on video last week. Sadly I have to give
this one a thumbs down. It wasn't a horrible film, it was
just very boring. It reminded me so much of "Used People"
which was a much better film based on a similiar theme.

252.2 | I would recommend this movie | 57176::MILANESE | | Tue Jul 13 1993 13:19 | 34 |
| I rented this movie last night and
enjoyed it also.
It's refreshing to see a movie about
older people dealing with issues relevant
to them; I saw Used People the other night
and enjoyed that also.
I would recommend both films if you like
this kind of movie. They deal with real
emotions that most people feel; the loss
of love, coming to terms with the pain, and
just dealing with your life when it's not
what you expected it would be.
I personally find those movies more interesting
than the Passenger 57 type which I also rented
the other night. Now, to me, those are yawners;
yet I see their appeal to others.
The casting of CC was brilliant with some fine
actresses and Danny Aiello also. I get sick
of the movies with good lookers, who can't act and
are there because of their looks.
Anyway, I found the love story charming, as I did
in Used People. It's also refreshing to see older
people falling in love and trying to figure out how
to go about it.
I would recommend this movie if you like a more cerebral
type movie......well, maybe cerebral is going too far, but
you get my drift. It's not Passenger 57, and not Howard's
End..kind of in the middle.

252.3 | I, also, enjoyed it | VAXWRK::STHILAIRE | a period of transition | Tue Jul 13 1993 13:28 | 16 |
| I rented this a couple of weeks ago and I enjoyed it very much, too. I
agree with the previous noter who said that it is refreshing to see
movies that deal with the life experiences of older women. Growing old
and losing a spouse is something that will happen to a large percentage
of women, yet rarely have I ever seen this aspect of life dealt with in
the movies.
I actually preferred this movie to Used People, which I saw last year
when it was in the theaters. I think what I appreciated the most was
the way that the movie showed how important the women friends were to
each other. Movies usually play up romantic relationships, or male
buddy relationships, but rarely do we see a movie which shows what a
major role friendships with other women play in most women's lives.

| Sounds like TCC is more of a womens movie then :-) For you
other men out there, I'd recommend you see "Used People" instead ....

252.5 | Women's movie? What does than mean? | 57176::MILANESE | | Wed Jul 14 1993 12:46 | 15 |
| Odd, I thought both movies were the
same kind of movie. Both dealt with
people coming to terms with their
lives, and both involved a love story
with an older couple. In addition,
most of the main characters were women.
So, are you saying that men don't
generally like movies that deal with
emotions and women do? Or that women
don't like action movies and men do?
Maybe this should be another topic??

Neither. I was basing my opinion on the previous replys where
women were saying they liked this film better than "Used People".
On the other hand I'm a man and thought "Used People" was a much
better film.

| I hear that often men/women movies,
but I am not sure what that means.
Oh, well, do you think there's
anything to that..that most men
like different kinds of movies than
women do?
I think it's an interesting topic.

| re .7, well, in *general* I think there are differences between the
types of movies that men and women tend to enjoy. But, of course,
there are always exceptions to this. I think that, in general, more
women than men tend to like romantic comedies (such as Sleepless In
Seattle or When Harry Met Sally), and that, in general, more men than
women seem to prefer action flicks (such as Top Gun, Lethal Weapon,
Die Hard, etc.). Of course, there are women who love action movies and
men who enjoy romantic comedies.
I think when it comes to movies where all or most of the main
characters are women (such as Fried Green Tomatoes, The Cemetary Club,
Thelma & Louise, Steel Magnolias, Mystic Pizza), that more women than
men enjoy them.
I think that there are a certain percentage of people of both genders
who don't seem to have the patience to enjoy a movie such as Howard's
End, Enchanted April or A Room With A View. However, in general, I
find that men who prefer action movies to all others, tend to have the
hardest time with this type of movie, whereas, while a certain
percentage of women won't like it, a large percentage of women will at
least sit still for them, without complaining. (Or, dare I say it, is
it just that men tend to complain more about seeing movies they don't
really like, than women do???)

What's interesting is I enjoyed Fried Green Tomatoes, Thelma
& Louise, Steal Magnolias and Mystic Pizza. Those were all
good films. I did not enjoy The Cemetary Club however. I
didn't hate it either as I said in .0, I just found it a boring
film. I felt the story was weak besides. That's why I found
Used People a much better film, even though both films were
similiar in plot, etc.
