Over the long weekend I rented a few movies and I think the best of the
bunch was "Red Dust" Starring Jean Harlow and Clark Gable. I thought
Jean did an excellent job in this picture about a rubber plantation
owner (Gable) in China and how Harlow winds up at his plantation and in
his life. This was later remade into Mogambo (sp)
I've seen Harlow's "Hell's Angels" and must agree with all I read, she
was definitly typecasted as a "Harlot". In "Hell's Angels" her acting
stunck and she wore some of the flimsiest out fits. I could definitly
see a difference in her perfromances from Hell's Angels to Red Dust -
same type of character but much improvement.
Unfortunatly Jean died a painfull death in her 20s from kidney failure.
Her mother was a practicing Christian Scientist and refused her
daughter medical attention until her final hours, by then it was too
late.
Jean had little acting talent and had to work hard at whatever role she
tackled but I'm sure if she had more time she would have been a fine
actress.
Does anyone have a list of her films?

She was pretty out of control, in a Belushi_esque sorta way, for a few
years.
Her drinking/drug taking and her sexual exploits were legendary.
Too bad about her mom being in charge of her health. The lady looked
like a little zealot all right, looked really scary.

though I don't doubt her 'loose morals' I strongly believe most of her
'sexual exploits' to be a figment of the PR department's
imagination...they may not have made up all the stories but I believe
they have embelished on the truth.

I'd say she was a good actress with a limited range; her outstanding
performances (that I've seen) are in Red Dust, Dinner at Eight
and Libelled Lady. She had less success when she tried to work
against type (Wife vs Secretary and Platinum Blonde) but she
was never boring to watch.

Harlow was also one of the most well liked people in Hollywood. "She didn't want to be famous, she just wanted to be happy", Clark Gable. "If ever there was a square shooter, she was one", Spencer Tracy. She was certainly a free spirit and deserved better. First Paul Bern, then her mother (yes, I know her mother preceded Bern, I'm referring to what her mother did to her). She was the original blonde bombshell and all the ones who followed owed something to her. Randy | |||||
