| Who's Lyle Lovett?
Name sounds familiar but I can't place it, what's he been in?

He's the Lyle Lovett in Lyle Lovett and his Large Band. I've no idea
what sort of music they play, or any of that.
I say good for them. Hope they're happy.

| Lovett usually gets classified as "country," but he's more eclectic
than that - lots of crossover and hard-to-classify stuff, as far as I
can tell. But he did do a cover of the quintessentially country "Stand
By Your Man," to close out "The Crying Game". ;-)

| He's a unique looking person, to say the least, but he's got a great
voice and I like his music enough to consider actually buying a CD.
I saw a snippet advertising a stop on his tour for around here, and the
song he was singing sounded very gospel. Not to be un-PC, but I was
sorta surprised he was white. He's got one of them "big", soulful
voices. :)

I know Lyle personally and he's one of the nicest people you could ever
meet. If you get curious about his music, start with his first album.
Rolling Stone listed it as one of the 100 best of the 1980s.
And for the record, though his music has been categorized and described
as many things, Lyle started out in the early 1980s as a folk blues
performer, performing in such cozy little spots as Anderson Fair Retail
Restaurant in Houston, Texas.

-< She's No Lady... >-

Well if Lyle conducts his life the way he writes his lyrics, then
Julia is now "...no lady, she's his wife."
Congratulations, Lyle. Congratulations, Julia!
At least they each found a mate from the South!

| I agree completely with -.1 - Lyle Lovett's music is extraordinary! He is very
original, has a great voice and writes very witty, and touching lyrics. If
you want to buy one of his albums, I suggest that you start with his latest,
JOSHUA JUDGES RUTH (named after three of the consecutive books in the bible).
It has gospel, blues, love songs, and country. It is my favorite album in
years.
As for his acting (since this is the MOVIES notesfile!), he has a very
interesting face and is a natural. He was one of the cops who worked with
Whoopi Goldberg's character in shadowing Tim Robbin's character, and he was
the person that Robbins thought might be sending him the hate mail. He can be
very menacing looking and should get a lot more such roles in the future.
And as for the marriage, congratulations to both of them! Perhaps Julia has
finally outgrown all the pretty boys and has fallen in love with a good and
talented person.

| About Lyle's performance in "The Player" - it was excellent. You
weren't sure he was a good guy until he flashes a badge and asked Tim
Robbins character to come in for questioning.
I am cross-posting some additional notes about Lyle, his music, the
wedding, and of course, Julia:

I've enjoyed the comments about Lyle's marriage to Julia Roberts,
especially the one about this going to 2000 replies.
I know Lyle personally and I think Julia got a good deal. He's a
genuinely nice Texas gentleman, in addition to being a brilliant
songwriter.
However, in the same vein as the comments about fame and fortune being
related to people's popularity, one of Lyle's songs said it THIS way:
"She's got emerald eyes.
She's got ruby lips.
She's got diamonds on her mind.
If you want that girl,
Son, what you need is
Some M
O
N
E
Y!"
By Lyle Lovett
From M-O-N-E-Y off the Pontiac Album, 1987
It's a great tune, but then most of his stuff is great.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope for Lyle's sake that he never has to pick up his guitar and sing
this song from his first album to Julia:
"Who keeps on lovin you,
When you been cheating,
Spending your nights on the town...
Chorus:
God does, but I don't,
God will, but I won't,
And that's the difference
Between God and me."
From "God Will" By Lyle Lovett, 1986
From the album, "Lyle Lovett".
By the way, in 1989, Rolling Stone magazine named this album one of the
top 100 albums of the 80's.
Some used to accuse Lyle of being a misogynist back in 1986, because
of lyrics such as those listed above. Now he's married to one of
America's most beautiful women. Not a bad comeback, eh?
Way to go, Lyle! Say, does she have any single sisters that you could
introduce me to?
:-)

-< Fiona Be Standing By Her Man! >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
USA Today (6/29/93) carried some interesting stories about the wedding.
It turns out that for a few months Lyle has been dedicating songs from
the stage to "Fiona", which is Julia's middle name.
A few days after the wedding, Julia appeared on stage to introduce Lyle
saying, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I'd like to introduce my husband, Lyle
Lovett and his Large Band." Later, she was reported to have joined him
on stage while he sang, "Stand By Your Man".
I think Julia will Lovett, and I give it 45 years.
:-)
Sheesh! that reminds me, I have to get a card in the mail. Any
suggestions as to what I should write?

I plan to buy one and have the cover framed.
