205.0. "They Knew What They Wanted" by ESGWST::RDAVIS (Not so genteel as real gentlemen) Wed Jun 02 1993 16:40
A rare opportunity to see Carole Lombard in a straight dramatic role.
She was great.
A not-so-rare opportunity to see Charles Laughton overact.
Plot: Laughton is a stupid noisy lovable Italian immigrant who makes
wine in Napa Valley and has "gotta fiffateena hunnah dollahs in da
banco, you betcha". Lombard is a waitress that he's infatuated with
and marries, even though she is so bee-youtifool and he is so ugly.
Laughton's cynical right-hand man has sex with Lombard. Everybody
cries.
The ending sustains a groin injury attempting to simultaneously punish
the sinful and be uplifting.
Speaking of strain, the movie is worth seeing for Frank Fay's
horrifying performance as a lovable priest. Every heartwarming grin a
flash of shark; every twinkle a down-swung butcher-knife. Only
comparable to Klaus "I Eat Your Dog" Kinski's charming scallywag in
"Fitzcarrado".
