197.0. "A River Runs Through It" by 12368::michaud (Jeff Michaud, DECnet/OSI) Wed May 26 1993 01:52

This one is directed (and co-produced) by Robert Redford.
It stars Craig Sheffer, Brad Pitt, Tom Skerritt,
Brenda Blethyn and Emily Lloyd (I got these names from
the box, the only actors I recognized was Tom Skerritt
as the Reverend, and Emily Lloyd as the girlfriend).

The story is about two brothers growing up as sons of
a minister in the early part of this century. Robert
Redford narrates the story (as the older brother).

I don't know much more that I can say about this movie,
except that I loved it. It you're looking for an
action adventure, a comedy, or even a serious drama,
this isn't it, it's just a good story.

Oh yea, was nominated for three oscars, and took home one
(for Best Cinematography, wish I had seen it on the big
screen, as the video version was not letterboxed :-()

197.1View with proper expectationsVMSDEV::HALLYBFish have no concept of fireWed May 26 1993 14:139
The cinematography was worthy of the award, but I was really
disappointed by the movie. It was a matter of expecting a plot
    and not finding one.

I wouldn't call it a "story" so much as a series of vignettes.
Long "Bicentennial Minutes" without the drama. Many of which
were interesting but didn't go anywhere, on to the next portrait.

I liked it a lot, and found it very moving, and I have no interest in
fishing! :-) I thought it had a plot, an interesting one. I, also,
thought the acting was good. I thought Brad Pitt especially did a very
good job of playing the wild, but likeable brother. I cried at the
    end.

I'm not to sure why but this movie had the same touch and feel for me
as Field of Dreams which is a very high compliment! I thought the
movie was great, it just quite simply told the story of a family and
how they intereated within the family group and with friends. It was
kept low keyed and very true to life.

I also think that Robert Redford is one fine director and has a great
eye for picking out good stories to tell. I've yet to see one his
flicks that I have not enjoyed.

197.4Good movie16821::VETEIKISThu May 27 1993 09:4715
I thought this was a terrific movie also.

The part that moved me was the illustration of how a father and his two
boys took very different paths in life, yet held a common bond that
runs very deep; a bond that is unspoken, as often male relationships
are, but are known by each and makes them one. I can't recall any other
movie that I've seen that has done such a splendid job of representing
    the "mystery" of male relationships.

Relationships came first in this movie and primary, plot was secondary.
I applaud this risky move. Why? So many movies have sacrificed the
development of of the characters and relationships, to "entertain us"
with a spellbinding plot. This is one movie that didn't do that.

I loved this movie. It was slow-paced and told a story of a family,
and those are the movies I find the most fascinating. Every family has
a story and this one moved me. The acting was above reproach and the
scenery made me want to move to Montana and bait my hook. Just a
    beautiful film.

I thought it was kind of boring. Nuff said.

I know that this a Movies rather than a Laserdisc conference, but after
seeing the disc this weekend, I thought I would recommend it
unresevedly to anybody wondering whether to buy it. The picture is
(with the exception of The Abyss - Collector's Edition) the sharpest I
have ever seen. The sound is excellent, there are loads of chapter
stops and there even some interesting liner notes on the sleeve. If you
have a laserdisc player and you like this film, get the disc. It's a
    stunner.
