| So it must have been "Patriot Games", where I saw her, as I do not
know the other movies !

| I rented this movie the other night. The best thing I can say about it
is that it is a pretty movie with great customes. It is a very slow
moving movie (fortunately it is only 93 minutes). I know some of
actresses received Oscar nominations, but I wasn't very impressed with
the movie. My friend described it as boring.

| re .4, I totally disagree with you. I thought it was a wonderful
movie. It's an artistically beautiful and classy feel good movie. I
saw it twice at the theater and was completely captivated by it.

| re .4, I meant to reference .3, of course.
I, also, thought the movie had a few very funny lines.

| I also liked it, but this kind of movie is surely not everybody's
taste.
It is similar style as "Room with a view" or "Howards End".

I think you've hit the point. It was not my type of a movie. I
generally do not like British movies. I thought the pace of the movie
was very slow. Like I said it is a pretty movie.

I wish it had gone on for another 20 minutes or so.

182.9 | solid, not fantastic | 58323::DOONAN | | Tue Jun 01 1993 15:19 | 15 |
| I rented this over the weekend. While overall I liked it, I can't say
I walked away thinking it was anything fantastic. What troubled me the
most was the fact that the movie seemed to go from four ladies with
nohting in common (in fact, there was tension between the 'pair' and
the older lady) to being great chums in such a short time. I've looked
back on the movie since then, and I just can't find that 'bridge' that
took us from the former to the latter. This is one movie that could
have stood to go another 30 minutes or so.
But I can't complain about the performances. Joan Plowright was
wonderful, and deserved her Oscar nomination, and even her Golden Globe
win. But I thought Miranda Richardson was even more impressive. I
never saw her in 'Damage', but she surely deserved Oscar recognition
for EP. And to think that Marisa Tomei ... I'll stop now.

| I saw this last night - an excellent choice for viewing on a cold,
grey, drizzly April day, although it did tend to make me want to leap
for the phone and buy an airplane ticket to Italy. [Consumer warnings
ought to be attached to movies like this. ;-)]
There really wasn't much to it, but it was so sumptuously beautiful
that it didn't need much. Every single shot of the ocean views, the
flowers, the people basking in the sun or lolling in the shade made me
feel as if I were there, soaking up the warmth or feeling the tickle of
blades of grass... Mmmmmm!
And the "magic" of the place was, if a bit simplistic, still very
charming. I'm quite willing to believe that very different people could
open up to each other under such circumstances [although I could also
see a "dark side" movie featuring all the same elements, but in which
the differences built tension faster than the surroundings could
dissipate it - it'd be interesting, but not nearly as enjoyable to
watch on a miserable, cold day].
I rather enjoyed the way in which the romantic complications were
worked out; neither of the husbands became a knight in shining armor,
but each of them were shown to be more human, where they'd originally
been presented to the viewers as fairly revolting characters. [I
especially liked the reappearance of the squinting owner; he's just the
sort of quirky character that charms _me_.]
The performances were fine - and at least one was a revelation, as I
didn't recognize Miranda Richardson at all and had to check the credits
to see which one she played. [Well, OK, I'd pretty much ruled out the
older woman, but I suspect that Richardson could have played her, too,
if she'd wanted to.]
A very soothing movie, that effectively quashed all attempts by my more
cynical self to sneer pessimistically about what was likely to happen
to all those happy people after they'd been back in London for a few
weeks. [I don't mind tending towards cynicism, but it's refreshing to
just be pleased about something now and then...]
