180.0. "The Last Days of Chez Nous" by 6179::VALENZA (My note runneth over.) Mon May 10 1993 13:38
This pleasant Australian film tells the story of a woman's struggles
with a difficult marriage and a troubled relationship with her father.
The story begins when her younger sister, Vicky, comes to say with her
family. Between her husband, JP, a French immigrant who is often
obnoxious to her, and her often nasty father, things don't seem to go
well in her life. And as the film progresses, in some cases they seem
to get worse.
If this sounds like a downbeat movie, it isn't. It is surprisingly
pleasant, with many comic and touching moments, such as when she and
her father take a vacation through the Australian outback. There are
many little upbeat moments, such as when her daughter and a young
male tenant develop a mutual interest. Many such little moments,
involving music or dancing, populate the movie throughout. And the
film offers a subtle but very appropriately upbeat moment at the very
end.
I definitely enjoyed this film. 3 stars out of 4.
